I'm always talking about how much I love old movies and how present day ones don't live up to them (with the exception of O' Brother Where Art Thou). Well now I'm going to pay tribute to those movies... sort of. These are my top 10 favoritepresent day actors.
#10:
James Franco
A lot of people were kind of skeptical about James Franco after they saw him in the first Spider-Man movie. He kind of overplayed his character in that movie, and I personally didn't see that much in him. Then he redeemed himself for me in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. But then he gave one of the most hilarious performances I've ever seen in Pineapple Express. That's one of my favortie performances of the past decade.
#9:
Sacha Baron Cohen
This may surprise a lot of you, but what made me really get into Sacha Baron Cohen was in the animated movie Madagascar. I don't know why but I really liked his performance as the lemur king in that movie I decided to pay closer attention to him. I love Borat and I thought Bruno was alright but Cohen is one of those actors who always finds a way to make me laugh.
#8:
Steve Carell
How can you dislike this guy? He's the jacka$$ boss on the American version of The Office, he played an emotionally troubled man in his midlife crisis in Dan In Real Life, and he was a 40 year old virgin in well... The 40 Year Old Virgin. Steve Carell never dissappoints me and always has me laughing.
#7:
George Clooney
As I mentioned earlier, O' Brother Where Art Thou is one of my favorite movies. And George Clooney is one of the reasons why. He can be incredibly seriousas he was in movies like Michael Clayton and Syriana. But he can also be really funny like in Burn After Reading and O Brother Where Art Thou. And by the way, I forgive him for being in Batman& Robin.
#6:
Ricky Gervais
Just for the record, I like the American version of The Office more than the British version. But when it comes to actors, I'll take Ricky Gervais over Steve Carell. Ricky Gervais is always funny and is always making people includinghimself feel awkward. He hasn't been in a lot of movies, but it seems like no matter what he does, he's always really funny.
#5:
Christian Bale
Yeah, I know that he got way too mad at that guy on the set of Terminator Salvation, but you've got to admit, Christian Bale is a great actor. Just look at the line of work he's done, he's been Batman, a psycho, a cowboy,a 1930's FBI agent, and Bob Dylan. He may not be the nicest guy, but he's one hell of an actor.
#4:
Johnny Depp
How do you describe Johnny Depp? Just look at the huge career he's had and the large variety of characters he's played. How many guys have been Hunter S. Thompson, Willy Wonka, John Dillinger, and The Mad Hatter? Not many.
#3:
Jeff Bridges
If I had to give you a definition of the word "cool" in two words, I would say Jeff Bridges. No matter who he plays he always leaves his stamp on a character. To me and everyone else, Jeff Bridges will always be the one who is immortal and will earn his spot in history as... The Dude.
#2:
Jackie Earle Haley
This is probably the least known guy to show up on the list. While Jeff Bridges is the definition of cool, Jackie Earle Haley is just full blown awesome. He was Rorschach in the Watchmen movie, one of the inmates in Shutter Island, is going to play Freddie Krueger in the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, and of course, is Guerrero on Human Target. He's not incredibly well known, but hey, it gives him even more of an edge.
#1:
Robert Downey Jr.
He's Iron Man. He's Sherlock Holmes. He's Charlie Chaplin. He's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude. He's friggin' Robert Downey Jr. Now, I'm an atheist, but if I had to worship a god, it would be either Clint Eastwood, or Robert Downey Jr. Robert Downey Jr. is that one guy who gives 110% every time he's in a movie. He's never given a bad performance, and I doubt he ever will.
