Star Trek Online (5/10)

When I first that there was going to be a Star Trek MMO game I thought it sounded like a great idea. Star Trek has a whole universe of different worlds, environments, and species that would be perfect to implement into an MMO. I was imagining myself doing all sorts cool stuff like exploring your own ship exploring deserts, forests, or towns on planets having lots of cool missions to partake in like in a World Of Warcraft. With all of these possibilities it has a ton of potential to be great...unfortunately however Star Trek Online is just an average MMO and somewhat clumsily made. To me it's more disappointing when a game has a lot of potential but fails at delivering on it. The gameplay to me was very boring with the missions most is shoot a number enemies or engage in ship battle over and over again. The graphics for an MMO is okay but not great; when you're in ground combat and facing against a certain number of enemies the whole scenario doesn't as tense or exciting as it should and one of the things is when you're shooting at enemies it doesn't look or feel like the projectiles are hitting the targets. In ship combat when you're moving around your ship it doesn't look like it's moving even when the light trails are flowing behind. As far as the textures on the environments they're a lot of the times low-res. As for the controls it's kind of complicated. When you move around instead of using a mouse to look around you instead you'll be using the directional buttons to look around and you move like you're on a grid. There's a lot of buttons that you have to use for special power and abilities and it takes longer than it needs to be to get used to it. Don't worry there are some positives of this game. I really like the extensive character customization where get to choose almost any famous species in the Star Trek universe. You can also change the different types of uniforms from different versions of the show. The trademark Star Trek sound effects are also in this game and if you're a fan of Star Trek you might get into the nostalgia factor of it. There is also a huge amount of content in this game there is so many upgrades, abilities, weapons, and there lots of places to explore. But sadly with all the faults in the game Star Trek Online deserves better.

The Top 5 Games Of 2011

There have been a lot of great games last year. Some of those games showed something new and original and some of them gave us something old and made it a lot better. Games like Elder's Scrolls V Skyrim, Batman Arkham City, and Uncharted 3 have gained a lot of critical praise.

Now before you become dissappointed this is an incomplete list so the games I mentioned above won't be on this list because I haven't played them yet. So without further a due these are the Top 5 Games Of 2011...that I've played so far.

5. Battlefield 3

EA and their Battlefield series know how to make a first person shooter a very immersive game that make you feel like you're on the battlefield. With Battlefield 3 this is no exception because with realistic graphics and excellent sound effects this game unlike previous first person shooter games truly makes you feel that you're participating in a war.

While the single player campaign is some what fun it's the multiplayer that really shines. Unlike some of the Call Of Duty multiplayer modes where you run around a map with constant gunfire sound everywhere Battlefield 3 has bigger maps to explore and has a lot a quiet moments during multiplayer on some maps, which makes it some what realistic. Overall Battlefield 3 is the most realistic FPS to date.

4. Back To The Future: The Game

Telltale games not only made a good adventure game but probably the best Back To The Future game. This game pretty much feels like watching the fourth movie. It not only pays tribute to the preivous films it expanded the storyline and further develops the characters from the films. The voice acting is great with Christopher Lloyd playing Doc Brown once again and AJ Locacsio that does a great Mary Mcfly voice.

The adventure game elements are really fun with really easy but at the same time very clever puzzles to solve. With these elements combined with a good Back To The Future storyline this is a movie licensed game that is surprisingly good. If you're a hardcore Back To The Future fan check this game out.

3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

This game was one of the most unique games I've played this year. It gave us a cool basis where Augmentations are used more often in the future and how everyone defends it or opposes it, which created a some what believable atmosphere. It showed us the provactive ideas behind Augmentations from different characters you meet.

As for the gameplay itself it may not be as interesting as the intrigue but it is still really fun. You had the freedom to approach an objective however you want whether to go stealth or just shoot your way through. The best part is where you can wonder around the city breaking into different people's apartments, invade on a gang's territory, and complete different side missions that are actually more fun than the main story missions. While the game is very hard to play through it was very engaging as well as very fun.

2. L.A. Noire

Right from the start I knew that this game was going to be an experience like no other. This was a completely different and new game than Rockstar's usual open world type games. This was a game that truly made you feel like you're an actual detective in the 1940s. Every case you play through is unique and interesting each time and it showed us very gruesome murders for us to solve.

The interrogation, clue finding, and combat aspect of this adds to the really fun experience in this game. It has a really good neo noir story with strong performances from each actor and as the story continues the cases becomes more and more intense and involving. This is more of a thinkers game than the previous Rockstar titles and if you're into those type of games it's worth it.

1. Portal 2

When I first saw Portal 2 I really didn't expect much from a sequel to what is considered one of the most original and funniest game ever made. Even though I don't know much about this game I decided to play it. Once I started playing I got hooked. It surpassed my expectations and delivered brilliantly.

The puzzle were very clever and original and the difficulty was just right for each of these puzzles. Usually if I'm stuck in a game I look at a walkthrough to see if I'm missing something. But Portal 2 is one of those games where for each puzzle it feels hard at first but then you start to figure it out later it forces you to think and it does it job well. What sets this game apart from the first Portal game was the co-op mode where you and your friend have to solve the puzzles together and this is extremly fun to play. Overall Portal 2 is an engaging, funny, and amazing game that pretty much any person will have playing it.
