At the end of the day, a game that has reached beta has the fundamentals implanted. A game that is pre-alpha is in general considered playable, but not good enough to show to the public. A beta is a work in progress of a game that works.
Quake Wars is slated for release this summer. Now, in a few months time, do you honestly believe that they will redo all the animations or upgrade the engine, or totally change all the levels and weapons and remove and add new game modes? The game is a done deal. Ask any developer - The last thing anyone does before shipping a game to retail, is optimizing, bug fixing and balancing it.
Don't expect major changes. Thats simply down right stupid. The 360 fanboys say the same thing about Halo 3, but I promise you, that that game(like QW) is a good indication of how the gameplay and final game will be.
Thats not to say that small changes can't have a large impact. Obviously it would be a small change to cut the game speed by 50%, but it would totally change the gameplay. So in that sense we don't know how good or bad the final product will feel.
At any rate(havent tried the game yet) the setting in Quake Wars is much more interesting than BF2s alternative moderen warsetting. The strogg looks uniqe, and the marines got the halo-marine-with-high-tech-visually-moderen-stuff-we-can-relate-to.
As for the game itself... Well, it's a major bummer that the game don't seem to support 64 players. Thats just... dissapointing. I heard that it might be possible over LAN or something, but whatever.
FPS on PCs have sucked lately. Lets hope that the upcoming innovative Steam trio - Left4Dead, The Crossing and Team Fortress 2 will give a good multiplayer experience.
Also expect great things from other steam products like Natural Selection 2, and Portals multiplayer! And who knows what Half-Life 2: Episode 3 will have in store for us as far as extra games?
Quake Wars is running on the Doom 3 engine. Anyone who has played Doom 3 knows that the engine was not very good for large areas. that game was released in 04. we are now 3 years later. no wonder its not that impressive.
I think the console versions might also have had an impact on the quality of the game. now that they have to do 360 and ps3 versions they probably have had less time to polish the pc version.
Epic said the same thing about UT3. It killed them to have to do console versions for extra profit:/
but thats the pc communitys own fault when everyone is either downloading illegal games or spent all their time in world of warcraft. this community brought this upon ourselfs, and now we pay the price!
