@cassadyH I agree, there are major hurdles still in the form of consumer rights, there really needs to be a standard put in place so that the end user always knows what to expect when they download a title. can i redownload it? for how long?basic things like that
the state of the industry right now is leaving a bad taste in a lot of gamers mouths and for me the major contributors are retail games that pose significantly less value than downloadable titles which cost a fraction of the price and overpriced and undernourished DLC. I got more value out of Monday night combat than i ever did from any kinect title, what happened to out free game that microsoft announced Joyride, Microsoft turned it into a full blow retail title for $50 and it still had next to no content. the developers of monday night combat even give us a free piece of DLC after our purchase, when was the last time loyal fans of big titles like call of duty got that? the Makin map from world at war. I've seen numerous times that activision have cited the rising cost of software development as a big problem and i fail to see why when they have been churning games out over the past 6-7 years on the same game engine.
the first console i owned that i could anyone else interested in playing was the N64, before that every console sat in my room and was played exclusively by me but when the N64 came out i could get my buddies to play Goldeneye and Mario Kart and get my mum and sisters to play Mario Party. I think a lot of that was to do with video game stores becoming more highstreet and less dingey back alley.
I bought the Kinect on its promise of great games in the future, here i am 6 months later and Kinect adventures is still gathering dust in the same spot i left it a week after release and even the fancy motion controlled menus are starting to bug me, i had hoped not to make the same mistake with the 3DS but my birthdays coming up and i can't seem to get away from just buying it and a couple of DS games just to tide me over.
@markypants Great article mate, made me think pretty hard about which platform i will be going with now my blackberry is busted, probably one of the newer androids and i'll grab an Ipod touch for the best iOS games. tried out angry birds in the O2 store recently and was subsequently moved along after about 30 mins :p
