it really depends on your likes, and your situation. Both consoles are fairly even but the 360 wins out as far as it comes to most gamers.
The two advantages the ps3 has is blu-ray and free online. Personally I don't think blu-ray is all that great. I own a ps3, a 1080p 40 inch tv, and rented a few blu-ray discs. They didn't really impress me though and I haven't bought a single blu-ray disc. If you don't have a tv that's above 720p there's basically no difference from dvd. Free online is nice if you're not an avid gamer, while MS charges for live ($60 a year, but you can easily find $40 yearly cards if you shop around). XBL is a slightly better service w/ a more active community, and better features, but it's really not a big deal unless you're an avid gamer.
One thing you'll want to look into is which types of games you like that are exclusive to each console. Mass Effect, Halo, Forza, and Left 4 Dead won't be showing up on the ps3 while god of war, Gran Turismo, and Little Big Planet won't be making any appearances on the 360. Many 360 titles overlap w/ pc which can lead to some misinformation in system wars. Many argue that since left 4 dead is available on pc it's not exclusive and therefore irrelevant in ps3 vs 360 discussion which to me is stupid.

^ What this guy said.
Also take into account game performance- pretty much all multiplatform games look and run slightly (sometimes significantly) better on the 360 because they are developed for it then ported to PS3. Then there are things like exclusive DLC - Microsoft often pays for exclusivity on big multiplatform games so PS3 won't get DLC for a long time (like Fallout 3) or they won't get it at all (likeGTA IV).
I'd say if you can only get one console right now, get an Xbox 360. Once you play Mass Effect you'll know you made the right decision!
