That's easy for us to say sitting back not knowing what was going on behind the scenes. I'm sure that a condition of Gearbox taking over the franchise would be that it saw a release date within a certain time-frame, as opposed to them just acquiring the franchise and starting a new build themselves. We've seen what they are capable of with Borderlands, Colonial Marines is shaping up nicely and we know Gearbox could do a lot more than DNF. I think there are more reasons then meet the eye in reference to how this turned out.

This is where I think fans need to take a step back and just appreciate what Gearbox have done - they managed to release the un-releasable game. The game was fairly well developed by the time they took the helm of the project, it's not as if they re-built it yet again from the ground up. I would expect that the shell of the game was there and all that Gearbox did was polish it as much as possible for the release. Sure it's crass, lacking and feels out of place - but it gets me excited to see what Gearbox are capable of in a few years when they get the chance to make a Duke Nukem title from the ground up. Think of this as collateral damage, and look forward to something potentially great.
