Twin studies have more or less ruled out that it is purely genetic, environmental does not always mean choice.

A 7-year-old child in Africa dies tomorrow. He lived a life of starvation and ignorance, knowing nothing but his own hunger. He doesn't speak English and he lives in a very rough part of the country, so no misssionaries will ever reach him, certainly not by tomorrow. Where does he go tomorrow? What were the grand sins he committed against God, other than trying to live and trying to survive? Would any one wish to read me some scripture about where he's going to go tomorrow after he dies?

This isn't an argument that God doesn't exist but it is a good argument that prayer does nothing.

People can pray to get an iPhone for Christmas and then get one, thank God and enjoy their iPhone, while others who actually want the world to be a better place can pray for God to take away the disease and starvation in Africa and not a damn thing will happen. If there is a God who exists, and he does grant prayers, then clearly he needs to reassess his priorities.

Whenever you pray for something that comes true, it can be explained rationally. You can never pray for someone who lost a limb to suddenly regenerate that limb and expect it to happen, because it is not physically possible. It always seems like when you pray for a cancer patient to get better, and they do, a doctor was involved somewhere in there.

Aw crap, now my girlfriend and I can't ever go to service at that church! Oh wait, I don't give a crap in the first place. Nevermind.
