Fallout 3: Amazing while it lasts
by chez08 on Comments
I remember christmas morning, running downstairs and tearing open all the presents to find fallout 3. A game which i read all about on many different sites, (including the always amazing gamespot ;) ). I must have seen every single video posted on youtube about fallout 3 numerous times. That very morning i recieved it, i immediatly left the other gifts and ran to my 360. After a few hours of playing i realized there were still many presents waiting under the tree and it was 2:00pm! What i am trying to say is I was really excited about fallout 3. And i normaly dont feel this way about video games. Unfortunatly, after 2 short weeks of playing, i found myself wandering areas of the wasteland with dissapointment and boredum. After finishing most of the smaller quest's and main in a matter of days, their was nothing left to do but explore the unkown! I even had my own house in megaton and scavenged for interesting items to add to my collection. What killed the experience is due to several things which i will now list:. 1.) landscape was too vast which meant hours of walking in a sometimes empty, plain world. 2) vats ruined combat :I know its a fallout trademark, but it left the player stopping the game in slo-mo every 10 secounds when another enemy comes by. Sometimes i just wanted to jump into a battle and run and gun. due to the way the game is made for VATS, that just wasn't an option. Thus making what could have been an interesting battle, into a repetivive, non challenging one. 3.) The choices you make can alter the game for the worse or better: This is one of the reasons why fallout 3 is so unique, but sometimes i wish i couldn't have killed someone which later on could have been a huge help. All you fallout 3 gamers know what im talking about. But i guess it does make for an interesting experience. 4.) Some interesting parts of the game may never be explored: Since fallout3 is such a vast game, which relys on the players choices, you may have to replay the game multiple times to get everything it has to offer. Others areas are hidden away and left for you to discover. For example, i found a "haunted mansion" in the middle of nowhere deep in the wastelands. It was crowded with glowing ghouls lurking behind every corner waiting to pounce. I can safetly say, this was one of my scariest experiences in the game. The house was so massive and dark iwas dying to get out to safety. Apparently it was based on a poem by edgar allan po (although im not entirely sure) In all its a great game, but once you have looked past the choices the game has to offer and the surrounding environment, it will get old quickly.
