PC headsets won't work on xbox controllers. The Xbox headsets have a special setup inside the cord that allows the microphone and speaker part to work correctly.
It's probably a good idea to install them if you want to save your game discs. I've heard of thef Xbox having problems with the disc drive that ends up ruining the game disc.
