@Mantiskilla007 Too bad there were more people watching MLG this weekend than soccer (In North America) ever. You mad?
Guess what? Esports are legit. They take just as much dedication (or more) than "real" sports. These people are practicing 12+ hours a day to stay at the top of their game. Yes, its not as physically challenging, but there is a mental challenge and reflex challenges involved.
These teams are getting big time sponsors just like any other sport too.
I'm sorry 'your sport' didn't take off here, but that doesn't diminish the insane growth esports has seen over the past 5 years.
Another terrible article by Brendan Sinclair. Using a name like Thompson to peak people's interest.
People have the right to waste their money however they please. Thompson also was more against violence in video games making several false equivalencies to playing them and committing violence (science has shown otherwise). Meanwhile, you are just saying you disapprove of a way some are marketed. In a world where banks control everything and compound interest has us all in debt to them *forever* where we owe more money that is currently in the world, you are worried about F2P marketing. Wtf.
@gommybear There are plenty of people who coach in LoL or DotA as well but they are few like in SC. The percentage of ragers to nice people sucks in every competitive game.
@DashRender619 Publishers make no money from renting games. The place you rented them (Gamefly, Blockbuster, etc) already purchased the game for full price. (Source: I managed Blockbuster's Game Rush store spinoff that failed epically).
Movies can be a different deal when it comes to rentals (depending on the agreements made) but when it comes to games, 100% of the rental goes to the retailer it was rented from.
@finaleve Nintendo can still publish their own games if they go exclusive for another console and keep their vision. However, they would then be profitable as well.
Yes, the hardware R&D would get shut down. That sucks. Puts some people out of jobs. However, the other option is to cling to life until you finally go bankrupt. Then they sell the IPs to EA or Activision who have classically come in onto sinking companies and then ruined their IPs. Which do you think is worse? Keep a good quality game with some company restructuring, and be profitable, or fight to the end and taint your legacy forever?
@vault-boy Holding exclusives on a console that has the worst game sales of any console. That's brilliant too. They make 0 from console sales, its all game sales. They'd lose an extra 10% in royalities to Sony or Microsoft but gain 200-300% the sales they get now.
Nintendo is just clinging to former glory that they will never get again. They need to drop from the console business and continue to make handhelds and be a third party developer for other consoles. They save massive amounts of money on R&D not making gimmicy consoles and gain money in game sales. Its a no brainer if pride wasn't in the way.
Cross Platform.....only on apple products...that isn't exactly revolutionary. In fact, its expected of Apple. Its not scaring anyone. If your cross platform gaming is only amongst your own products, NO ONE CARES. Especially Mac. Smart gamers don't game on Mac. Sure the iPhone and iPad have some fun time-passers...but no one actually games on Mac unless they are just an Apple Fanboi. I know plenty of people with iPhones, and not a single one of them is going to get a Mac due to this. They are expensive and inferior (when it comes to gaming). So...no.
So Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo yawned as this news from Apple (and this article from Gamespot) passes without any effect.
@cipo89 Spoken like someone who knows nothing about the game.
There are very few heroes that are even close to being considered "OP". Tryndamere hasn't been one forever. He only stomps noobs that have no clue how to play (i'm assuming that's you). Riot patches the game every 2 weeks with balance changes so something that is considered OP isn't OP for long. PS: Anything that is 'cheap' with riot points, is generally very cheap with IP and would take only a day or two to unlock for free.
