Could? It already has. Stop spending 100 million on games. There are many that have cost less than 5 and has been better than most of what Ubisoft has put out.
@yourdem1ze WoW has been bleeding out for years now. They've already lost five million in the past 2 years. Its no longer the titan it used to be (no pun intended). All it will take is one swift kick and they will lose a lot more subs.
@Tyler Hanson Except GW2 was largely a failure when compared to many other MMOs. The playerbase has drastically dropped because the content is just a bunch of grind. Nothing substantial.
You know the industry is in trouble when the company who made the most off of subscription based gaming (several billion) will not make anymore subscription based games.
They know its better to just make a shit FTP where people will pay a lot more than 15 a month.
WoW isn't that great now, but its still the best MMO to have ever been made and maintained, and it was largely due to the fact that everyone in that game was always on equal footing, and everyone had to pay a small fee. In today's games its always 'free to play' but if you want a one up, or if you simply want to have any fun, you need to pay real money. Generally it ends up being more than the 10-15 per month that old sub based games were, and they produce little to no content post launch.
There are a few games that do fine in the FTP market and they do it well (LoL, TF2, DotA 2) but largely every FTP game is made to make a customer want to pay as much as possible in a short time, but not have enough content to keep them around. They use this high pay and turnover rate for a couple years, then shut it down.
Wonderful. I've pretty much given up hope there will ever be a good MMO again.
@haze0986 Sadly its the truth. A bunch of whiny entitled babies on the internet can't handle having two different consoles. So now we have the same thing, different branding.
