Today though racism has suddenly encompassed a whole variety of actions. The most ridiculous and insulting being the recent allegations that "Resident Evil 5" is promoting racism.
Kym Platt writes, "The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white mans job is to destroy them and save humanity. I have a job to do and Im gonna see it through.
This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young fearing, hating, and destroying Black people."
Let's go through the list of what is so unbelievably wrong with this statment.
1. Resident Evil is produced by a Japanese company, not an American company. So Platt is essentially suggesting that Capcom thinks white people are better than black people. That's a bit odd in my opinion.
2. The game isn't marketed to children, it's marketed towards gamers that are age 17 or older.
3. The game is set in Africa. Now if I'm not mistaken in many areas of the continent the demographic is predominantly made up of black people. Sure there are white people in Africa but if the game takes place in a village where all the inhabitants are black, well then the zombies will have to be black won't they?
4. Black people aren't being portrayed as savages in the game. They are being mutated by a disease and their humanity is taken away. If anything that should suggest that black people are just as human as anyone else and it would take a super-virus to strip them or any other human of their civilized tendencies.
Platt also wrote on her own comments board for her post, "Yes I am more comfortable with the zombies being white. In fact, ALL zombies should be white from this day forth."
If anyone is being racist it is in fact, Kym Platt. That statement is extremely insulting to me because it suggests that she believes that white people along with any other race should only be portrayed as zombies or any other type of adversaries while black people should only be portrayed as heroes in videogames.
If the game took place in an amusement park and the objective was to only shoot the black zombies that were mixed in with a crowd of white zombies, that would be racist. Platt fails to see what true racism is and ends up making herself the textbook example of a racist person.
If white people can be zombies, so can black people.
