A Dream of a Nightmare (Poem)

A Dream of a Nightmare

I lie awake, on the verge of sleep,
With thoughts racing and days planning,
Where our minds develop our life’s meaning.

The thoughts of one’s brain at night are deep,
Our personal philosophy is developing,
Where our future selves are in the making.

As our mind’s thoughts start to weaken,
We are suppose to drift to the land of sweets,
Where rainbow colored unicorns supposedly meet.

But not tonight do I escape the world,
To see these beautiful horned mares,
Because tonight I dream of a nightmare.

The flames burned against my face,
The screams encircles around me,
The smoke made it impossible to see.

Gunshots rang out through the streets,
Around me, death shouts were heard,
Merely horrid noises, not any words.

I started to run to get away from this place, but
Was shot by a police man, meant to protect me,
And my brain was lost inside a red sea.

I felt myself begin to rise up,
And as I looked all the way down,
I saw what was a nice, old little town.

The police all shouted some strange language,
As the shot people for merely moving,
So many lives this town was losing.

I opened my eyes to a village full of huts,
I looked down at myself, and all that was shown,
Was nothing but gut, skin, and bone.

I looked around at the sick, and the hungry,
And I felt myself drifting again towards the sky,
And saw all these poor people beginning to die.

I opened my eyes to a nice, clean building,
But when I looked outside of the window,
I saw a white missile moving like a torpedo.

It crashed in the wall, filling the room with smoke,
Flames burned the hair on my head,
And as quickly as it happened, again I was dead.

I opened my eyes, but this time to my ceiling,
My nightmare was over, and in bed I curled,
I was really happy that that doesn’t happen in the real world.
