I graduated two years ago and have spent the last two summers working for the Forest Service fighting fires. I made many great new friends and now I've moved back home to Marin. I'm at a crossroads point of life right now and currently debating whether to pursue forestry, physical therapy, or forensic science (yes three very widely different fields). Currently I'm attending College of Marin taking transfer courses. Well, there's three years in a nutshell.

Career Shift

Well, I started school again with my final senior year (thank God!) and over the Summer while I was working at my mom's restaurant, there was a day where one of our customer's mother had a stress attack as she was helping plan her son's wedding which was affecting her heart. Anyway, the Fire Dept. came and I saw that one of the crew members was a former track teammate! I was so excited that instead of saying hi, I happily said "What are you waiting for? Go do your job." It had been her dream and I was watching her living it. Right then and there I decided that I wanted to shift my career from film-making to firefighting.
My cousin just finished his firefighting training and got a job a couple of counties away from me. I've always wanted a really physical job and the way I see it, I could always go back to film-making if I want to. It's one of those careers you can do at any age really. My cousin had to take paramedic training as well, so even if I don't make it, I can become a paramedic if I want to.
Anyway, I'm going into this program called Explorers, a program where I work one weekend every week or someone told me at night (not sure which) at a firehouse doing mainly menial jobs like checking equipment etc. but I also get to participate in the drills as well. It sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun!! Then after I graduate, I'm going to firefighting acadamy in junior college so I can become a firefighting. There, they fight real fighters that are set up as simulations but dangerous none-of-the-less. So as I'm anxious to start, I believe that I will be able to succeed.
