More hardware power can't make a bad game good. Less hardware power can't make a good game bad, either.

Wow, what an excellent qoute! I honestly can say I chose game consoles because I fell through when it came to playing gaming on the pc. I was originally into building my own gaming pc for a while but upgrading my hardware every year or two to play the newest games at a good clip was getting a bit expensive and after getting married the wife wasn't liking this hobby of mine. Don't get me wrong, she's a gamer too but she also controls the finances and didn't like me mentioning multiple times to set some money aside for my desktop upgrades. I eventually came to the same ground as her in that upgrading my pc every year or two was getting a bit expensive in my opinion. I eventually dumped my desktop and got a (constricted) gaming laptop (G71gx) in order to at least play some games at decent speeds and graphics. But then the PS3 and 360 came into my life and I came to accept that consoles produce decent graphics as well and some of the exclusive are pretty great on the platforms. I eventually ended up just buying and playing my games on my consoles as I like to play comfortably on my sofa, pop a disc in, and just game without worrying - is this game going to run well, is this game going to run at all (*shakes fist at Vista and Windows 7 compatibility issues), will that game be ported to PC. Even my wife plays games with me on my PS3 and 360 (Little Big Planet, Halo Reach), something that NEVER happened on the PC. With me grabbing a tablet recently as well, my laptop is now only used for video editing and transferring files in between devices - I game primarily on my PS3 and 360 (and PSP and tablet).
What I don't understand (and the reasoning for System Wars) is what is up with the smugness of PC Enthusiasts. You know, I already know that the PC version will most likely be better but why condemn consoles and their owners out rightly like peasants. As mentioned before, consoles can still produce good graphics and excellent gameplay, exclusives especially work the systems like no other and shine for the consoles! Yeah it's probably not as sharp or run at 30fps vs 60fps (not always the case), but it's passable to alot of people and convenient to the point that people are happy to plop $300 for a simple pop a disc and play console instead of going with an over technical, OS bent $500+ PC. PC enthusiasts need to understand that consoles can be a good, fun, play time for everyone - just like their PC does for them, we just play differently as we also have different tastes. Heck, I like to pop in Crysis and warhead sometimes (yeah, old game I know) just to play with the CUUDATS mod and tweak it a bit, doesn't mean I turn around and play Killzone 3 on my PS3 and mumble "Man, I wish this was on PC", the experience and how you play is different (especially with Move support). I'm currently playing Mass Effect 2 on my 360 due to my file transfer from the first game but I don't even think in my mind, " Man, I wonder how this would look on my PC". I frankly don't care because I'm having fun playing the game and the game looks good enough for me to still drool over (not too much - I got carpet).
Overall to bring it back - to answer the OP's question, the main reason people buy a console is because of:
A. Price - $300 or less
B. Convenience - pop disc in and play, no OS or technical side of things to really fool around with
C. Exclusives - Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3, Kinect, Move, etc.
D. Comfort - easy to use controller, being able to use your surround sound setup and Big screen while on the couch - no keyboard or mouse required due to controller, headset, Kinect/Move
E. Family and friends friendly - Kids, wives, family members, and friends can mostly likely play easily with ya or eachother - Split screen gaming whether competitive or co-op mostly only on consoles
F. Presentation good enough - Games still look great yet the gameplay is still intact and roughly the same as PC or across all platforms (wii's another story)
That's what I can come up with - along with this long post...
