The facts as I see them:
1.) Iam into video games, and always have been.
2.) My income is such that if I want to play a game, I will buy the system it is on and play it.
3.) I am not biased against any system or company and choose a system based entirely upon wanting to play available games.
Going back I've owned a Nes, Genesis, Snes, Nintendo64, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, Nintendo DS, PS3. Never picked up an Xbox because it didn't offer anything that didn't look better and play better on PC.
The next gen systems, as they currently stand are all crap. The wii is an underpowered overhyped gamecube with a gimmicky controller. It is thriving purely on hype, as evidenced by the fact that wii sports is almost everyones response to the "what's your favorite game on wii" question. Sad.
Xbox 360 is probably doing the best overall, and I think unless PS3 gets lucky will be considered the overall winner. It is the easiest to develop for, port to, has the largest market currently, etc. and is mainly held back by it's failure rate. It still doesn't have any games currently out or coming out that I personally see as being truly next-gen or graphically amazing. I really wanted Gears of War and Dead Rising, but then I tried them out on a buddy of mine's 360. Dead rising is Grand Theft Auto with less cars, and Gears of War is absolutely mediocre and overrated. I think I enjoyed Halo 2 more than GoW, and I didn't even like Halo 2.
PS3 has alot of potential but is hampered by the fact that multi-plat games look like garbage on it. Marvel Ultimate Alliance has framerate issues, that's all that needs to be said. Until developers have a compelling reason to put time into games for PS3 they are going to look like garbage. PS3 has some promising upcoming titles, but it seems to be the system that will always be "Awesome...sometime next month" as opposed to right here, right now.
I'm so underwhelmed by the next gen systems that I feel really betrayed by the video game industry in general. Every time I feel like playing a game these days I end up popping something into my PC or PS2 that's several years old, and is outlasting everything on every next gen system as far as fun goes.
