Examining Jake... My Two-Cents on the American Dragon's Legacy

Yep, the deed's done, but I still haven't gotten over this great show, so I thought I'd say a piece about the show's episodes. As for why I like the show, it's one of the few cartoons today that doesn't talk down to the children, with interesting storylines, clever and unseemingly-forced jokes, and a serious relationship that actually developed. Here we go.

Season 1:

"Old School Training": Uh, OK, not the series' finest. The slang here is used more than in any other episode, but it does introduce a lot of what's to come for us, so I give this one credit for that.

"Dragon Breath": Better then the first, for sure. The idea is pretty clever(Jake unknowingly takes a Nix to his school dance), and I got a good laugh at Jake's dragon breath here.

"The Talented Mr.Long": Funny material here, with Brad not being able to play the piano, and Fu Dog as a puppet, and the fight between Jake and the genie's pretty inventive.

"Legend of the Dragon Tooth": Here we learn that Haley's learning her powers, and hers and Jake's relationship developed here, but the crazy dentist idea was pretty strange.

"Act 4, Scene 15": My first episode, and still remains a favorite. The foreshadowing for what's to come with Jake and Rose by using the play Antony and Cleopatra was really great, and we get a little more into the story arc here.

"Adventures in Trollsitting/Fu Dog Takes a Walk": "Trollsitting" was pretty funny, to watch Jake hide Stanley from his aunt, but I don't think I was too crazy for "Walk" last time I saw it.

"Professor Rotwood's Thesis": The show's turning point for me. Trixie and Spud discover that Jake's a dragon, just when they give him up to Rotwood for money! And best of all, Jake didn't erase their memories, a step up for him!

"The Egg/The Heist": "Egg" was no good, a predictable romp in which Jake and Huntsgirl/Rose via for an egg, but "Heist" was a nice Mission Impossible tribute, and introduced Pandreas for us.

"Dragon Summit": Interesting, really interesting here. We get acquainted to the Dragon Council, discover that relatives normally aren't allowed to be a dragon's trainer, meets numerous other dragons, and get introduced the the awesomeness that is the Dark Dragon.

"Body Guard Duty": My second favorite. I love the Oracle Twins, and the were entertaining throughout, and even gave us a little warning in the future here. Oh, and Trixie and Spud tying the "knot"= win

"Shapeshifter": It would of been even ebtter if Jake could of kept this power. Oh well. anyway, straight-on spoofs of Jesse McCartney and Tony Hawk in this one, plus more of the Huntsclan.

"Ski Trip": Wow. Jake learns about Rose, about hwat she does, and wow, just, wow. That's all I can say here. A must watch.

"The Long Weekend: After last ep's drama, a lighthearted ep is a nice change of pace. Jonathan's naivety is well-developed here, and adds to the plot, plus on the flip side Haley develops her powers a little as well.

"Eye of the Beholder": Really funny ep to have Fu learn a little more about woman, and Panderas returns, too! I will say I think there was a little more then necessary crude humor last time I watched, but it was decent nonetheless.

"Jake Takes the Cake: Nice to see Susan have a job. A couple of good soap opera parodies and a nice song to tire down the gremlin's, but it's ultimately filler,

"Hong Kong Nights": Excellence! We learn more about Lao Shi's past as the Chinese dragon, including how he first took down the Dark Dragon and met both Fu and Chang.

"The Halloween Bash": Interesting idea for a Halloween ep(Jake combines both humans and magical creatures), and also shows the returns of both the Huntsclan and the Dragon Council.

"Fu and Tell/Fight of the Unicorn": "Tell" goes a little more into Fu's past, which is always nice, but "Unicorn" didn't do it for me.

"Keeping Shop": Started out pretty funny watching Trixie, Spud, and Fu take care of the shop alone, but once Trixie and Spud gained dragon powers, it sortof went downhill for me.

"Ring Around the Dragon": Jake tries to bring back a child giant who joins a Wrestling League, yawn! I've really only seen it once, but the ep(even with Trixie selling Jake merchandise) was rather dull.

"The Hunted": Had some nice emotional buildup, and the ending did bring me to almost tears, but the "Jake brings along magical convicts" subplot should of been non-existent.

Season 2:

"Bring It On": Everyone was scolding the new artwork, but I didn't care. As for this ep, I liked having Trixie, one of the most despised characters, develop a little for a change, and it introduced one of my favorite series sub-plots: Spud's quest for Stacy's heart

"Half-Baked": Watching Jake try to get back Rose by any means was inspirational indeed, but the ep itself isn't an all-time favorite, but we do meet Sun Park.

"The Academy": Just the entire thing, watching Jake and Spud sneak into the Huntsclan academy and having Jake finally find Rose and sneak her out, was just too epic for Disney Channel to handle.

"The Doppelganger Gang": Eh, not a fav. The entire thing(Jake makes a bunch of clones of himself to do 20 different things at once, but also has an evil clone to spice things up) just has that "been there, done that" feel to it.

"Something Fishy This Way Comes": Whoa, the Principal is a mermaid! Didn't see that coming! The ep itself is pretty good, too. And who knew that Spud wanted to be a mermaid?

"Breakout": Jake's dragon acne isn't pretty, but Rose's affections for him remaining the same even then sure was.

"Family Business": Sun Park returns as Haley's dragon trainer, and Haley learns the ropes as well. Not bad. Not bad at all.

"Hero of the Hourglass": Wait, a time traveling episode that doesn't mess with the continuity, and not even a reset button used? Yep. Only on AD.

"Dreamscape": Here we learn a little more about Rotwood's past, Spud's dreams, and Rose's family. Damn, that was shocking.

"A Befuddled Mind": Panderas is pissed! And after seeing what Jake did to his empire earlier on, I would be too. This ep proves that Spud is different from the pack of morons, and why he's a fav.

"Fool's Gold": The slang is basically unbearable here, and the animation doesn't help, and the plot isn't even that original(Jake selling out? Yawn.), but it's worth it for the final 1/3.

"Feeding Frenzy": We get to see more of Jake's family here, and Jonathon and Lao Shi's relationship grew a little, too! A two-in-one!

"Haley Gone Wild": Heh, Haley gets all bad on us, nice change of pace for her.

"Supernatural Tuesdays": This was pretty great. Nigel's an interesting foe/ally for Jake, and Trixie and spud help the school in their own way!

"The Rotwood Files": Nice, Rotwood learns a little more about Jake. Or a lot. Guess why.

"Hairy Christmas": I, uh.... Haven't seen it yet. Postponed on that when it aired last year. Maybe i'll share my thoughts later.

"Switcheroo": We learn more about Haley's struggles to be so perfect here, and that ending always gets me.

"Love Cruise": Damn, that was great. Shame I only saw it once.

"Year of the Jake": I also never got the chance to see this one. Weak.

"Homecoming": What more can be said about this one, expect that 30 minutes doesn't do it justice?

"Young At Heart": Jake matures a little here, in more ways then one. It's fun, particularly elderly Spud's battles with the gnome, but it's merely a "This Man.. This Monster" to AD's "Galactus Trilogy".

"Siren Says": Most seem to hate it, but I kind of like it. It's surprise ending with no moral is at least worthy of some praise.

"Shaggy Frog": Tons of fun in this one with Spud becoming a frog creature, and the return of 3's 88 and 89.

"Nobody's Fu": Warmed us up for the series finale, yes, but I cannot stand Bananas at all.

"Magic Enemy #1": Really interesting to show Rotwood driving Jake to the brinkof insanity just to reveal his identity before his 48th birthday, and the Oracle Twins return as well.

"A Ghost Story": Jake, next time, leave the ghost hunting to Danny, you're just not that good at it.(don't laugh, Danny, you're next!)

"Bite Father, Bite Son": Nice to see Jake and Johnatan's relation develop here, and see Jon go all crazy on the vampires.

"Game On": Ugh. My least favorite. It serves no purpose; no good fight scenes, no funny scenes, no development, it's just filler.

"Furious Jealousy": Nice to see Spud's desire for Stacy be the focus here, and the return of Fury. Plus Jake's Rotwood impression was classic.

"Being Human": Jake's narrating was a nice touch for this near-finale, and also to see Haley take on Jake's job for a change.

"The Hong Kong Longs": As a regular episode or even a season finale this would of been excellent, almost perfect, but as an only 22 minute series finale, it's really disappointing. not going into details here, though.

There's my 2 cents. Keep the change.
