I'm proud to say that I owned the original game on the Sega Genesis (the small version, the 'second' version of it). I loved Sega, but I never had the Phantasy Star games or I'd have actually enjoyed it more. Very slim on good RPGs and such games when compared to the SNES. But the Genesis did have a lot more platformers and 'action' titles. Plus no censoring of Mortal Kombat =D I played through it, and it took me about 2 months to finally 'beat' it. The first time I went through to play I ended up losing the 'final' battle and got the 'bad' ending which ironically was a lot beter then the 'good' ending. So then I gave up on it for a week and then got back into it and FINALLY beat it but when I got to the hourglass animation I was like WTF!? and so damn pissed. I thought the game had frozen or something, but no...the reward for all your effort is just an hourglass animation, period. I mean what utter **** Even the **** games ever made have a 'The End' screen or something. But nope, we just get an endlessly looping animation. Either they ran out of time or w/e but I really would love to play the game again, emulation really does help with the difficulty. ^_^ I still retain a lot of my 'old school' gaming ability. I was at the mall and some idiot was selling those pirated '400 in 1' NES games packed into an N64 controller ripoff. So I played Contra and, on 3 lives, went from the beginning all the way to the end while only dying twice and never having to continue. I beat the game, put down the controller, and told the guy 'I hope Nintendo shuts you the **** down' and then left.

It seems my post was cut off, so I hope others can contribute more then I could. GameSpot, you get negative points for not mentioning or showing your explicit character cutoff limit for messages.

I'm very upset about one of the changes from the 'old' gamespot. They completely removed the 'Stability' part of the review. As a PC gamer, this was one of the few websites that had such a system and it was a great way to determine game stability and whether subsequent patches really made a difference. Treating PC game reviews like other platforms just makes you lazy and stupid. Come on GameSpot, I KNOW you guys can do better! Give PC Game reviews the attention to detail they deserve! Mention stability issues in the byline without us having to read through the whole review, just like it used to be before the big site design changes! AND PUT SOMETHING ABOUT COPY PROTECTION! Especially StarForce and its ilk!

I blame StarForce and other draconian DRM schemes. Piracy has been an issue since the earliest days of PC gaming, its still an issue even with audio and movies.

However when publishers sieze control of your computer and assume they can do whatever they want with it, that's when things go too far. Disclaimers in EULA's also prevent them from really getting the s*** sued outta them.

Ironically, last I checked, console gamers have *never* had to accept any EULAs just to play a game. Draconian copy-protection schemes are also all but nonexistant. Its all built into the hardware, and modding consoles locks out online play, discouraging most people from doing it (even if its just a hardware mod to upgrade the hard drive w/o shelling out tons of money to M$).

So that's what is killing PC gaming. Useless and malware-like DRM like StarForce that only hurts legitimate users and can *permanently* cause physical damage to optical drives of PAYING LEGAL CUSTOMERS!!!

I'm even hesitant to download many recent PC game demoes anymore, hearing about how even the demoes are laced with StarForce, supposedly to plug a loophole of using the demo's code to bypass the protection. One thing that company does well is install paranoia, fear, and outright lying and deception to anyone and everyone in the name of profit.

Honestly they need to have some laws made regarding PC games that not only lead to the elimination of EULAs but also places unrevokable criminal and civil liability on any company that causes hardware failure through their software or services.

After being sued a half-dozen times by very angry govts and a bunch of class-action lawsuits, maybe publishers will think twice on whether the 'benefits' of DRM are worth the cost.
