@justinofclark: except Archangel and Strike Suit Zero, none of the others you mentioned are directly comparable genres though, and Archangel looks clunky af
Outclassed several times over? By what? I can't think of a single mech combat game that provides the same kind of fast paced gameplay that ZOE does. The only one that seems to come even remotely close is Anthem, a game that hasn't even been released yet.
@James_xeno: I'm not writing off anybody's opinions, there's some perfectly valid feedback here that I'm looking forward to verifying when I play the game myself. But as someone who really enjoyed the last couple of games that Tabata directed, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he had good intentions and he and his team have been working hard.
I'm sure taking on a troubled, hugely ambitious project stuck in development hell for nearly a decade has its unique challenges and I wonder if any other team/director could have done that much better a job. That would be speculating and as people have rightly pointed out, I haven't played the game yet.
But I'm familiar with his work and still feel like the comments calling for his exit from the numbered series before he's had the chance to create a vision that's truly his own would be unfair.
Just my opinion (which could change after I play the game). Not trying to start an argument here. Peace :)
As an FF fan and someone who hasn't played this game on consoles yet, I'm looking forward to the PC version and I think the director has a great attitude. It's great to see his evolution from Crisis Core and Type 0 to getting the chance to direct a proper numbered entry in the series. From all the interviews I've read of his, it sounds like he's really supportive of his team and has a great work ethic.
