well. i have a 32" 720p TV in the living, and a Dell 24" 1920x1200 screen. And i can tell you the difference is phenomenal.
when i connect the PC to the TV and play HL2 at 720p it look alright. It's big so its good. But when i play it at full res on the Dell its awsome. it's soo much finer.
although they both cost around the same i would go for the smaller monitor but higher res. the problem is that 1080p monitors are made with better panels than the 720p tv (cos 720p is a cheap monitor). so the difference is not only with the res but with colour reproduction aswell.
and to those people that say , yeah but the dell doesn't have HDMI, well no it doesn't , it has DVI. guess what, DVI is better. i have a ps3 connected through DVI. yes HDMI to DVI. HDMI is a smaller version of DVI with sound. DVI goes up to much higher resolution. check out the dell 30". makes 1080p look pathetic. DVI is also a lot clearer. HDMI is a Sony invention !!
a few points though. if you buy a 1080p screen buy an expensive cable. It does make a difference . mine cost in excess of 150 dollars. and its worth every penny. (thats 1m long).
the problem is games. the PS3 is the only console that trully plays 1080p games. and even then most games are natively 720p and upscaled. my point is , if you buy a 360, go for 720p. there will be no difference. and PS3 won't have true 1080p games till the first party titles come (yeah ! gran turismo!). so if your getting or have a PS3 get the full 1080p screen, just save up some more money or buy a smaller screen (go for PC screens, they're much better than TV screens). Plus it would be more future proof.
im not dissing any consoles here. my house mate has a 360 and its awsome. but there is no difference between the two screens, but play ridge racer for PS3 (the only true 1080p game i think at this time) and you will notice the difference.
if you intend to play hi def footage. also buy a 1080p screen. colours will be better on it.
So , again. it all depends on what your going to do with your screen. but i would recommend the FULL HD.
Hope it helps in your quest to find a good screen !!
