If I were to buy Battlefield 3 on D2D, would I need Origin?

I'm pretty sure they patched in the extra visuals, at least the lighting.

The only thing missing are the real-time cutscenes. You can find a mod for just about everything else.

Do you have a link to this patch? I would like to use it.
