Don't you guys just hate when you see a friend playing an awful game and then say that is one of the better games ever... it's an insult to the beautiful masterpieces we so much like, this usually happens with classic games that make new releases and everybody purchases them just because of the name, here is the obvious example of silent hill, I don't think there's a game that could have been that much screwed up with the years, come on i don't even believe when i see somebody playing silent hill origins.
It's never a good idea to judge a game for it's predecessors, so why don't we knowers of a great game talk about the perfect way to fabricate a perfect game?
Like in poetry, a game needs both to be beautiful and enjoyable. In the beautiful part the first thought we get is 'bout the graphics, a game must look good in first place to catch your attention, to envelop you, here is an excellent example the so beloved survival horror series silent hill known for the deeply disturbing environment created, not only with help of the beautiful designs and art direction, but for the original soundtracks every release has.
Why do you want a beautiful game if it's so boring.... As a gamer I love those moments full of action, and those of terror.
Unluckily for me there hasn't been a game that scares me since silent hill 4 that has already been released for a while, but we still have nice action games such as borderlands, bioshock and dead space.
Still the big problem of the newly released horror games is the same, none of them scares...
This fear factor has been lost because of lots of reasons, here are some:
-First of all, who thought it would be a nice idea to make survival-horror protagonists people with fighting experience?
It was so nice when you used to be a little girl who didn't know how to use a gun in silent hill, it was a lot scarier to be wandering around with someone who doesn't have a thousand ways to kill a single monster, which might also be a bit of a problem in resident evil but we let that go because resident evil was born that way.
-Since when you need a lot of ammo, and slow enemies?
Games like Re4 Re5 and Sh2 just give you lots of ammo, that's an awful mistake you feel more confident when facing multiple enemies, makes the game easier, etc.
And the slow downs, they should learn a couple of things about dead space, those are bad ass ugly bastards.
-Total lack of brightness
I remember how scary it was when i played in blue creek apartment, probably players of so twisted silent hill 2 also remember it, it was just wicked hearing monstruosities lingering around the hallway without looking at them, and without a gun.
Feel free to post another reasons of the lack of horror in games, and which things do you think makes from a game a masterpiece.
