I don't think this guy is an idiot but I don't agree with him either. There are gamers that have very different levels of income and because of this different ways of gaming will always exist.
Miyamoto is probably worried that if people think a 3ds xl is just a few months away from being released that sales of the 3ds will dry up. Letting people know that the 3ds is not getting a update any time soon helps get them off the fence and out buying a 3ds. The price drop on the dsi and dsi xl were also tactics to get people off the fence and out buying the current hardware.
This is why Sony continues to fail as a company. They invest a huge amount into the Vita then ignore it at the biggest game show of the year. Sony continues to throw away all the ps2 success that it built-up a decade ago, it's painful to see sony screw up and throw it all away.
Consoles don't matter that much, it's the games that matter. It's always nice to have good graphics, but if a game is good and fun that usually means more on deciding on a purchase. So, make more good games and leave the consoles alone for another 3 to 4 years.
