Even if you bought it off e-bay it should still be covered by the warranty- I would return it before that runs out. Contact Sony. BTW I can't believ there are no controllers until June! I guess thats what people who live in smaller regions have to put up with. I live in Japan, and at the moment they have bundles of everything (especially controllers)- I have even seen wii's in stock.
Good luck!
Fedora Core 5 and Yellow Dog 4 are both very easy to install and very similar. IMO go with Yellow dog unless you have a standard tv, in which case FC5 is better. For video play back i recommend vlc, but remember to get the ppc (power pc) version, and it takes a while to track down all the dependencies BUT it is totally worth it because vlc can play just about anything.
Get yellow dog linux from there web site : http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/ (you can also find a very good install guide pdf here).
Its linux and therefore its free, as is all the software. I managed to get linux up and running and had never used or seen it before in my life- so it cant be that hard because im rather a block head when it comes to these things. The good news is there is no way you can break your ps3 doing it. If the install goes pear shaped just hold down the power button for 6 seconds and the xmb reloads.
Good luck!
Fedora core 5 is snap to install! Playing multi-media however is a major chore (no out of the box video/dvd support on FC5- and totem is lame). After a week of messing around I managed to get vlc to work.
Side note: why do people criticise the look of the PS3? I think it looks great... Consoles have come a long way in the looks department since the days of the ps1 or xbox.
