As for the Stalker games, either/or might do. I liked the first one a lot but got bored with the second one after a couple of hours as it is basically the same game; they have just recycled the maps.
The best FPS for me though is GRAW 1/2. It all looks the same but I have played them both 4 or 5 times and still am not bored with them.
(A good mindless shooter with all the environments is Painkiller!)
I saw the first Total War game and didn't like it much but anyway that is probably your answer. You get an army, work out what to do with it.
All the other base-building games are not much to do with strategy; you just build as many powerful units as fast as possible, grab them all with the mouse and click on the enemy. They are all the same and nothing very strategic, all about numbers.
