Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while, I've been having a little trouble deciding what to write about, and since I still can't decide, I'll write about a couple freeware games I found yesterday. (Any suggestions for my next blog post, I'd love to hear 'em.)
The first game is called the white chamber (Yes, no caps). It's a point and click horror adventure game from British independent game developer Studio Trophis. I went into this knowing nothing, and I was really surprised to see just how much of a gem this title is. So I'm sure some of you are wondering, "Point and click? Why the hell would I want to play that?" This game proves adventure games still have some kick to them. The plot, which I'll go over in a minute, makes me think of Silent Hill meets Event Horizon (Yeah, crappy flick, but the whole derelict ship thing makes me think of it.). Studio Trophis is known for their anime animation, and TWC is an exemplary showcasing of that. If you're turned off by anime, I urge you to look past that, because the story is well worth it. You play as a woman who awakens inside a coffin of a ship devoid of life. With no knowledge of who or where she is, you have to uncover the mystery behind the blood on your hands. Yes, expect quite the plot twist. The game is short (lasting maybe 2-4 hours, depending on how fast you can figure out the puzzles) but what's really surprising is that the whole thing is hand-drawn, and damn well, if you ask me. It even has several FMVs, hand-drawn as well. Also unexpected was the voice acting, which is really frickin' good (one person almost sounds like Sean Bean). The game will give you a couple frights (not including the hilarious segment making fun of the NES and 8-bit gaming), but all in all, it's just extremely gory. With 4 different endings, replayability is a sure thing (not to mention, when you unlock all 4, you get a 20 minute prequel to the story). So please, download this game, I swear you will not regret it!!!
On the other hand we have Cabal Online. Uh oh, I can already hear you saying, "Another MMO? Wtf happened to 'ZOMG Rappelz'..." Well, I'll tell you to shut up and listen. Rappelz wore out its welcome in about a week, and perhaps I was somewhat overzealous with finding a free MMORPG. Well, now that my uncle got me into using FilePlanet, I decided to try the open beta for Cabal, which is the title download on FP for now. Cabal is much more exciting than Rappelz, looking much better in terms of graphics (almost equal to WoW) and user-friendliness (one of the most important aspects to an MMO). It was good enough for me to play til 1 in the morning glued to the screen, I'll just say that. Unlike most MMOs, which are behind the screens turn-based, Cabal is almost truly real-time, your skill depending partially on how fast you can mash the number keys, not just how high you stats are. Keep in mind, this is the beta, so most of the stuff has not been implemented yet, like pets, but the game is truly looking solid, and a little different from most MMOs, which is a nice change of pace. Unlike the massive overworld in most RPGs, especially MMOs, Cabal uses a warp hub to take you to several different areas for exploration. The gear is truly ridiculous, which is entertaining.
So I urge you to check out both titles, even if they don't really appeal to you. Remember, free stuff never hurt anyone!
And don't forget to check out Yahtzee's new review on CoD 4. One of his best yet!
