Isn't the goal to make more money by adding more games and this is a token attempt by the league?LJS9502_basic

Yea, that's the only thing Goodell cares about. But do you really think an NFL fan cares about money? They just wanna have fun watchin their team.

I like strict rules in sports. I stopped watching NBA games because big name players are allowed to do whatever they want. You can scream at the ref & put on a pouting show without any consequence. At least players in the NFL know that someone is watching them. People will be made an example for the rest and I have no problem with that.

I agree, I don't wanna see players yelling at the refs and acting like a diva. But that's not really what this thread has been about, it's mostly been about Goodell taking away how a defender can tackle somebody, and if they accidentally hit a runner the wrong way, they're gonna pay for it, in dollar bills.

he could be saving it as concussions coulddestroy the league very qucikly

Anybody that thinks Goodell is trying to protect the players by fining everybody is naive. If he really cared about the players, he wouldn't be trying to add two more games to the season. Doesn't care about the fans, players, all thats left is the money. That's all Goodell cares about.

[QUOTE="wstfld"]I think the NFL is fine. Players will adjust. wstfld

How? Two Raven players were fined for something they really couldn't control. One accidentally hits Big Ben in the face and is fined...for a freaking accident. The other hits a player in the head with his shoulder pads only because the ball carrier went to the ground. Ball carrier went to the ground, tackler didn't, so he hit his head. Fined 40k. It's **** ridiculous. I want him out.

The NFL now believes that head shots are unacceptable, even unintentional ones, and the best way to enforce that policy is to fine offenders. It will get players to start form tackling instead of just uncontrollably launching themselves.

Uncontrallably launching themselves? When you go in for a tackle your helmet is going to be leading most of the time. Who tackles without their head in the front. NFL is forcing defenders to arm tackle.

Goodell is going light on these. Some of these things deserved suspensions. What the average fan doesn't realize is that concussion research has been flowing in like crazy over the last year. Congress was about ready to step in on the NFL in the first place. Also you need to watch the video describing the "new rules" as they are not new rules. They are just adding fines and suspensions to rules that existed already. I will repeat absolutely no rule was changed on the field just punishments for it off the field.ttobba07

No that's incorrect. Goodell has mentioned several times to the media he has told officials to throw the flag and to err on the side of caution. Meaning, if it even looks questionable, throw the flag. Who cares if we cause a team to lose a game? So the rules aren't the same, the on field penalties are different for these hits now.

Cool, we're all for player safety...yet why extend the game schedule by 2 extra games? NFL Ref's are suddenly making these BS game-changing calls, which get reviewed later a week after the fact only to find that the call was incorrect. I know the refs are only human, but just some of these calls are ridiculous...

The NFL is changing in a bad way :(

criegz

I think it's about time the NFL starts to allow teams to challenge penalties. There are so many new rules, and the refs have to make all these judgement calls in real time. Like the SUH unnecessary roughness penalty, it's obvious he pushed Cutler and not forearmed him. That cost the Lions a first down in the redzone. Two times bogus calls have lost games for Detroit this year.

I think he has to act on the concussion thing. Medical science has proven that those are very bad for people. Many former NFL players are basically cripples from multiple concussions they have sustained during their career. Most other jobs have OSHA standards. Why should the NFL be different?

sonicare

Uhhh....because they get paid millions to play the sport, and contact is part of the sport.

The major point about Goodel is that he is treating the NFL more as a business than any other commissioner before him. Sports commissioners need to find a balance in making the fans and players happy, and yea they wanna make money. Roger is solely focusing on money, and don't say he's trying to protect the players. He's just fining for more money.

It's obvious you're not a fan. Fans consider the NFL a great sport, while you consider it a business.

No, I'm pretty serious about my football having the NCAA and NFL packages on two TVs every weekend on DirecTV. The NFL isn't a sport, its a league. Football is a great sport, the NFL is nothing but a business.

You really think if you ask a general NFL fan "What do you think of the NFL?" they're gonna say "Oh yea, that's a pretty good business. Makin a lotta dough." My point was most fans don't view the NFL as a business because it isn't a business to the fans.

[QUOTE="cybrcatter"]For me, the NFL is better than other professional sports because there are strict rules, and because those rules are actually enforced. 99.9% of plays aren't even effected by the new rule anyway. The 'pansy' jokes just make me lol. wstfld

That's part of the issue. Goodel put these rules in place that limit how a player can play defense. They were never present till Goodel took over. Not to mention the inconsistencies with fines. I just find it crazy he fines a man 75,000 for a hard hit. Most people don't even make that in a year. Also, the NFL is being run completely by people who have never even played in the NFL. How can they know how to best run the league.

James Harrison fined 75,000 for this :http://www.steelersdepot.com/2010/11/james-harrison-hit-on-ryan-fitzpatrick-video/

Oleg_Huzwog

He blatantly leads with his head, using his helmet as a battering ram. That fine was fully justified.

Yea, he did, but 75K, comon. And did you watch the other video? You don't think two guys who start an all out brawl throwing fists should get a larger fine, they didn't even get suspended.
