Endless Space can automatically show you the results of each battle without you having to actually go through the battles yourself...

You would have to go through the level to find fuel and other materials. One of the bosses was a giant floating head, that had like a scorpion tail that came out of it's chin. As I child, the game seemed EXTREMELY difficult. .
