Happy 1234567890 everybody!

Yes, happy 1234567890! For those of you (I'm assuming most) who don't know, just a couple of minutes ago 1234567890 seconds passed since January 1st 1970.

I was planning to celebrate this unique event with a couple of friends, and by celebrate, I mean get completely wasted :P Unfortunately I had to cancel my plans, since I have to get up early in the morning and paint the walls in my apartment. I really don't want to do that with a huge hangover.

A lot has happened since my last blog, which isn't really surprising considering it's been 3-4 months since my last blog.

Anyway, I bought a nice apartment not too long ago, but haven't moved properly in yet. I bought a ton of new furniture, but I'm still waiting for most of it to be shipped.

I've had some really hectic last couple of months, having to work overtime pretty much every day, which also explains my inactivity. On this occasion I'd like to apologize for neglecting the blogs of my friends on here. When you don't have much time to spare, it's really hard to keep up with blogs. And It doesn't really look like it'll get much better for another couple of weeks. Sorry :(

Experience Wii, Warhammer Online and more.

Just felt like sharing this link http://www.youtube.com/experiencewii. It's a really brilliant ad for the new Wario Land, imo. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

I just got my copy of Warhammer Online. I wasn't planning to get anymore MMOs, but I was discussing the game with a few colleagues and one thing led to another, and now we all bought the game, lol. I'm planning to play it casually though, since I still want to be able to play other games.

I shipped my xbox a few days ago, and it should have arrived by now. So hopefully I'll get that back soon enough.

Oh, and also it's my birthday today :P

Just a year...

Just a year. That's about how long my 360 elite lasted. Last night at precisely 10:15:30PM GMT+1 my xbox RROD'ed (http://www.gamespot.com/users/ejstrup/view_image?id=aY8N5BVw7hqU4R_glg) on me. I was kinda hoping it would last longer (maybe even the entire generation), but I guess that's just too much to ask for. Thanks, Microsoft, for a good year with only a few random crashes. If you do decide to make a nextgen console, please, for the love of god, hire some competent hardware designers!

Being a newbie to RROD, I'm not really sure what the procedure is. I've sent a mail to xbox tech support, hoping they'll be able to help me. I'm not really a huge fan of tech support or any kind of support servicein general. I always get to talk to the kind of supporters, who assume I'm a retard and waste my time with a ton of retarded questions. Anyway, I'm hoping the response will be quick and concise.

Back!

I'm back from New York again :D Was an awesome trip. Did you know that New York was huge? :P Well, seriously, it was pretty cool to see how big everything in New York is when you're used to tiny Denmark, hehe.

I also bought Condemned 2: Bloodshot (PS3), Burnout Paradise (PS3), Soul Calibur IV (PS3). On top of that, I got Rock Band (360) and R&C: Quest For Booty. I'll have some games to keep me occupied for a bit.

I'm going to New York!

Yes, I'm going to New York tomorrow morning, so I'll be gone for about a week.

I'm quite excited, as I've never traveled outside of Europe before. Unfortunately, I've spent the last couple of days in bed, because I've been sick. Typical! :/

On a sidenote, did anyone check out the review of Too Human? Ouch! After the demo I wasn't expecting much, but 5.5, wow...

Wii impressions

I've had my Wii for a couple of weeks now. As I mentioned in my last blog, I got SMG, SSBB and obviously Wii Sports. A few days ago I also bought Metroid Prime 3 for just £17($35), but I haven't had time to play it much yet.

I've spent an equal amount of time on SMG and SSBB. As expected, the graphics are absolutely disastrous on both games on a HDTV. I'm still waiting for my component cable to arrive in the mail, so that could help a bit, hopefully. I don't see how some people can even compare the graphics to PS3 and 360 games. It's just a few days since some random guy made a topic about how Dead Rising on Wii looked identical to the 360 version. Seriously, are these people blind?

Anyway, wii obviously isn't about graphics, it's about gameplay and innovative controls. But, frankly, SMG has been somewhat of a disappointment so far. I've collected just about 32 stars and 4 grand stars (or was it 5 :P), so I've tried a fair bit of levels to form an opinion about the game. The camera is one of the things that put me a bit off this game. At some points you can turn the camera yourself, but mostly you'll have to deal with it as it is, which can be frustrating at times. Some timed events can be a pain when the camera is messed up. :/
The controls aren't as innovative and fun as I was hoping. You use the Wiimote to aim the starpointer and to collect and shoot Star Bits. I don't really see the point in Star Bits. It kinda feels like they're just there to make you use the wiimote more. Collecting them gets a bit tedious anyway, imo. You can also perform a spin attack by shaking the wiimote to the sides, which is pretty cool. Whenever you need to climb a vine or something, you shake it up and down. It's not that the wiimote integration in SMG is bad. Sure, it's exciting in the beginning, but once you get used to it, it doesn't seem like such a big deal.
As it's a Mario game, the story is pretty much nonexistent. There's no voice acting either. It's not a big deal, it just seems a bit lazy as most big budget games have voice acting these days.

I don't dislike SMG, but with all the praise and hype surrounding it, I couldn't help being disappointed when I got to try it. Maybe 3d mario games just aren't for me. I've always liked the old 2d ones way more than the new 3d games.

Luckily, SSBB hasn't disappointed me at all. I'm still surprised at the amount of different game modes available in the game. I've played through about 30% of the campaign, which is much more to my liking than SMG. 2d platforming combined with fightning = yes, please! I also played a few matches online, which was pretty good fun. It's just weird to play online with anonymous players and no mics, when I'm used to xbox live. It's still fun though.
I haven't had a chance to try the game with any of my rl friends yet, but I'm sure that'll be a blast.
One thing that made me wonder, was how the game didn't use any kind of motion sensing. I mean, motion sensing is the biggest advantage of the Wii, and one of their top titles doesn't even make use of that advantage at all. Not that it matters much, since the game is great anyway. Just makes you wonder if motion sensing isn't just a tad bit overrated though.

Well, I got to try Metroid Prime 3 a bit today, and so far I'm very pleased. As far as I'm concerned, it might just be the best Wii game. Best I've tried, anyway. THIS is how motion sensing should be done. Using the wiimote to aim really adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game. I also love the soundtrack. Some of the tunes are really creepy, which I guess is normal for Metroid. Well I dunno, I've only ever played one Metroid game on Gameboy :). The only thing missing from the game is HD graphics, but the graphics are actually pretty good for a Wii.

In the beginning I was having second thoughts about my purchase, but after having tried Metroid Prime 3 a little, I no longer regret getting a wii. I'm also looking forward to the new Wario World. 2d platformer + Wario? I say, bring it on!
I'm still glad I have my PS3 and 360 though, cause I wouldn't be able to survive with a wii alone.

Why so serious?

Ok, short blog. I have just returned from the cinema. Obviously, I watched The Dark Knight. And, WOW! It is absolutely awesome.

If, for some reason, you haven't seen it yet, drop whatever you're doing now and literally RUN to the nearest cinema. Everyone should experience the glory that is The Dark Knight!

Heath Ledger did a really awesome job playing The Joker, it's just a shame we wont be able to see him in the sequel :(

Bestest movie ever!

Wiiiiiiii

Well, I just got home from Roskilde festival 2008. It was awesome, except for the fact that I was sick all week. Really bad luck, considering I haven't been sick for a year  It was still good fun though. Also, Chemical Brothers live = epic win!

Anyway, I just saw a decent deal on a Nintendo Wii and SSBB for $460. Yeah, yeah, I know it may seem like much for you americans, but that's what the wii usually costs here with no aditional games. A wii game usually goes for $85-$95, while 360 and PS3 games are $105-115. I also ordered Super Mario Galaxy, which I've been wanting to try for a good while now.

Tbh, I'm not the biggest wii fan. Frankly, I think it's a damn shame it was built with lastgen hardware, cause let's be honest here, most wii games look rather pathetic. I have a big HDTV, so why shouldn't I be able to enjoy my games to the fullest? Well, I'm not going to let that ruin my fun, and I still have my PS360 for HD gaming. Wii will be great for parties and games like SMG, I'm sure. :)

Ahhh Duke Nukem, how I miss you!

I've just been sitting here watching some of the Duke Nukem Forever footage, and it really takes me back. Duke Nukem was my first real FPS experience. Well besides Doom and Wolfenstein, but I only got to try those at my friends' places, since my family didn't own a computer back then. Not one that was powerful enough to run those games anyway.

My dad did have a laptop from 1989 though. I believe I've been told the retail price was some $8000. Yeah, suddenly those $3000 crysis PCs don't sound so bad. Anyway, being a PC from 1989, it didn't really have much of anything. It did let me play games such as Leisure Suit Larry 1, Police Quest 3, Pacman (oh yeah!), Prince of Persia and so on. Being 7-8 years old with no english experience whatsoever, it wasn't very easy to get past the damn age verification system! You had to answer a series of question in order to play the game. I usually just guessed till it let me in. In retrospect, I'm not sure how smart it is for minors to play Leisure Suit Larry. If my dad knew anything about Leisure Suit Larry, I'm not sure he would have let me play it. Well, it's not like I ever managed to get very far in the game. I did manage to get peed on by a dog and order a drink from a bar though.

Police Quest was where it was at though. I managed to take my clothes off and have a shower, and get the keys for a police car and take it for a spin. Why showering is part of the game, I'm still not sure of to this day.

Well enough about that, this was supposed to be dedicated to Duke! My first encounter with Duke must have been back in 1996 when I was about 11 years old. I tried it at my friends place on their LAN. Up to that point I had never tried a multiplayer game on PC before. Not on LAN anyway, and certainly nothing like Duke. I was impressed to say the least. Later that year my parents decided it was about time to get one of these "personal computers" and see what all the fuss was about. I was thrilled! Duke 3D was, of course, one of the first games I got. About a year and a half later, my mother got a a sweet deal on a PC from work, bringing our PC count up to 2. Somewhere inbetween that I believe we hooked up to the internet aswell. 56k baby!

Anyway, my love for Duke grew infinitely, now that I could finally play on our own LAN, whenever I had friends over. But the best had yet to come. For a good while I was unaware of the huge potential of PC game modding. I don't know how exactly it happened, but I found a modding site for Duke 3D with a bunch of TCs (mods). Frankly, a lot of them weren't that great, but it was interesting to me as I had never experienced modding before. One TC stood out among the others. That TC was SST TC (Starship Troopers). Really great mod. Every Duke fan should play it.

Having discovered a new side of duke and gaming in general, I decided to take up modding myself, or mapping in particular. In late 1999 I managed to get a position as a mapper for Aliens vs Duke. Being a huge Aliens fan, I was quite excited about this. Unfortunately development kinda died in 2004 and stopped completely in 2006 :(

I miss you duke, I miss you modding. 3D Realms better bring out DNF soon!

YES, YES! MGS4, finally!

Oh man it's been a long wait for MGS4, but it's finally here, and I just got it today. I'm glad the stupid postal service didn't take as long as they did with GTA4, which happened to show up eventually.

I've only played about 10 or 20 minutes of the game, but I'm loving every second so far. It's unfortunate that I have an exam in 10 days, but I'll try to squeeze some hours of MGS4 in now and then. :)
