I've had my Wii for a couple of weeks now. As I mentioned in my last blog, I got SMG, SSBB and obviously Wii Sports. A few days ago I also bought Metroid Prime 3 for just £17($35), but I haven't had time to play it much yet.
I've spent an equal amount of time on SMG and SSBB. As expected, the graphics are absolutely disastrous on both games on a HDTV. I'm still waiting for my component cable to arrive in the mail, so that could help a bit, hopefully. I don't see how some people can even compare the graphics to PS3 and 360 games. It's just a few days since some random guy made a topic about how Dead Rising on Wii looked identical to the 360 version. Seriously, are these people blind?
Anyway, wii obviously isn't about graphics, it's about gameplay and innovative controls. But, frankly, SMG has been somewhat of a disappointment so far. I've collected just about 32 stars and 4 grand stars (or was it 5 :P), so I've tried a fair bit of levels to form an opinion about the game. The camera is one of the things that put me a bit off this game. At some points you can turn the camera yourself, but mostly you'll have to deal with it as it is, which can be frustrating at times. Some timed events can be a pain when the camera is messed up. :/
The controls aren't as innovative and fun as I was hoping. You use the Wiimote to aim the starpointer and to collect and shoot Star Bits. I don't really see the point in Star Bits. It kinda feels like they're just there to make you use the wiimote more. Collecting them gets a bit tedious anyway, imo. You can also perform a spin attack by shaking the wiimote to the sides, which is pretty cool. Whenever you need to climb a vine or something, you shake it up and down. It's not that the wiimote integration in SMG is bad. Sure, it's exciting in the beginning, but once you get used to it, it doesn't seem like such a big deal.
As it's a Mario game, the story is pretty much nonexistent. There's no voice acting either. It's not a big deal, it just seems a bit lazy as most big budget games have voice acting these days.
I don't dislike SMG, but with all the praise and hype surrounding it, I couldn't help being disappointed when I got to try it. Maybe 3d mario games just aren't for me. I've always liked the old 2d ones way more than the new 3d games.
Luckily, SSBB hasn't disappointed me at all. I'm still surprised at the amount of different game modes available in the game. I've played through about 30% of the campaign, which is much more to my liking than SMG. 2d platforming combined with fightning = yes, please! I also played a few matches online, which was pretty good fun. It's just weird to play online with anonymous players and no mics, when I'm used to xbox live. It's still fun though.
I haven't had a chance to try the game with any of my rl friends yet, but I'm sure that'll be a blast.
One thing that made me wonder, was how the game didn't use any kind of motion sensing. I mean, motion sensing is the biggest advantage of the Wii, and one of their top titles doesn't even make use of that advantage at all. Not that it matters much, since the game is great anyway. Just makes you wonder if motion sensing isn't just a tad bit overrated though.
Well, I got to try Metroid Prime 3 a bit today, and so far I'm very pleased. As far as I'm concerned, it might just be the best Wii game. Best I've tried, anyway. THIS is how motion sensing should be done. Using the wiimote to aim really adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game. I also love the soundtrack. Some of the tunes are really creepy, which I guess is normal for Metroid. Well I dunno, I've only ever played one Metroid game on Gameboy :). The only thing missing from the game is HD graphics, but the graphics are actually pretty good for a Wii.
In the beginning I was having second thoughts about my purchase, but after having tried Metroid Prime 3 a little, I no longer regret getting a wii. I'm also looking forward to the new Wario World. 2d platformer + Wario? I say, bring it on!
I'm still glad I have my PS3 and 360 though, cause I wouldn't be able to survive with a wii alone.
