@ccarruthers: I got the feeling it was a bit phoned-in and overly critical in order to arrive at a number that would mollify certain factions that are going to be 100% inventing everything they can come up with to try to destroy it.
@joecollin: While they are competent, I could easily see myself giving the KC games a 7. Combat is polarizing, but many find it totally janky and absurd, especially when you're fighting 7 people by yourself and they politely come at you one at a time instead of pigpiling you while stabbing, ending you quick. Some prefer more fantasy elements to the attempt at "real world". Stories are decent and well told, but somewhat cliched. Some mechanics, like having to bathe all the time to max influence, are disruptive and irritating and break immersion to many people, while others consider them more immersing. Alot to like about both KCs, but pretending they're universally considered the pinnacle is silly.
I do enjoy seeing people who haven't played a game say that the games' story and characters are crap though. That's always amusing.
"It turns the impactful combat into drawn-out skirmishes where you're vulnerable to a quick flurry of attacks while slowly chipping away at an enemy."
Love seeing reviewers complain about things in one game that are touted as what makes other games the best ever. If you put that sentence in a FromSoft review, you'd have people chasing you with pitchforks and torches.
Freeze is very fun too. Do NOT discount it. Focusing on evasion, shield and freeze is a little painful early on (since early is where you'll find them) but once Herald of Ice and Ice Strike arrive it's just silly.
"And one addition we got to see for the first time was the ability to use third-person or first-person combat. Both feel great, and while I personally opted for the first-person perspective most of the time, third-person is looking and feeling good too. The only slight gripe I have is that the movement can have a bit of that floaty Obsidian style to it in third person, but that doesn’t affect combat all that much."
Sooooo, there's that. I would also say expectations should probably be based on an understanding and acceptance that it's an RPG first, combat game second. I don't think anyone could reasonably expect any game to be everything at once....and NONE are.
Love the Pillars universe, so hoping this will live up to it. Watched a preview video from Force about it last night. He was pretty hyped up and I tend to agree with him on a lot of games, so that's maybe a good sign.
