A Review Of The Grand Theft Auto Series

After making my recent review of the Assassins Creed series on my blog I decided to continue on with them. Today I will do a review of the FULL Grand Theft Auto series

Grand Theft Auto (1997)

Rockstar Games

The year was 1998. I was 4 years old when I played my brothers copy of Grand Theft Auto. I never did much at first, I pretty much just ran around and got myself killed. But I couldn't stop playing. I continued to play this until about 2001 when I got my PS2. The game is possible one of the best PS1 games of all time. The story is pretty easy to follow and its surprisingly short. There are about 8 cutscense in the game but they are all pretty funny, the fact that they are bleeped out makes it even more funny.

My score: 8/10

Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)

Rockstar Games/DMA Design

Grand Theft Auto 2 was mainly over looked until I found it sitting in my basement about 3 years ago. I played it and I just could not even get into it at all. The game was just a little too unrealistic for Grand Theft Auto. The only good parts were in the Trailer Park and the guy that looked like Elvis. This is a below par game that I now see why I never played it.

My Score: 5/10

Grand Theft Auto 3 (2001)

Rockstar/DMA Design

Grand Theft Auto 3 could quite possiblely be the best GTA games of all time. The stroy is exicuted wonderfully and no other GTA has been able to top the "feel" of Grand Theft Auto 3. The game was a truning point of all games. Everybody on my street wanted to play this game and they would always come to me and asked if I wanted to play it. I became off limits for a few months when my Mom found out the true nature of the game, but my Dad always found a way to get it back into my hands. My brother and I always fought for it but we eventually both ended up playing it and enjoying it

My Score: 9.5/10

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)

Rockstar/Rockstar North

Vice City is a wonderful game, but it takes so many ideas from other "Gangster" movies from the 1980s it almost ruins it. The game is vastly improved from GTA III and includes new weapons, motorcyles, and the best of all the soundtrack. The setting of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is 1986 and they couldn't have picked a better setting than that. The sterotypical haircuts, cars, tech, music, and even the intro makes it one of the best in the series. The game was the beging of a new era of GTA games.

My Score: 9/10

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)

Rockstar Games/Rockstar North

The game that set the high bar for expectations for free-roam sandbox ****gameplay. The abilty to go anywhere, do anything really changed the genre. The story is also very well executed which is a added plus. The game is the longest featuring 113 missions and over 50 hours of gameplay along with very strong RPG elements. High customiztion, hours of gameplay, awsome story and setting make this one - if not THE best - games in history and the best of the series.

My Score: 11/10 (Yes thats possible in my scores :P )

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2006)

Rockstar Games/ Rockstar Leads

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories does a decent job of brideging the gap before GTA III, but I never really cared for it. Its a decent game in every way and doesn't set the high bar for anything unlike SA. It was decent enough to kill some time before GTA IV

My Score: 6.5/10

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006)

Rockstar Games/Rockstar Leads

The best of the two spinoffs of GTA. I use to play this all the time on my PSP when traveling. The game has alot of good features that make it one of the best early PSP games ever. The ablity to take over bisnuess and turn them into whatever you wanted added more varity to the game. The game centers around the Vance Family that is presumibly disbanded after 1984. The "feel" from GTA Vice City is back and that makes it much better.

My Score: 8/10

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008 )

Rockstar Games/ Rockstar North

Most likely the highest rated GTA of all time and I agree 100%. The game is executed so greatly in every single way that makes it one of the best games of all time. Grand Theft Auto IV's story is probably the best in the series, Niko Bellic and Balkin war veteran goes to America to see his cousin, Roman... or so you think. As the game progress you learn that his real motivation was revenge against Darko Beveric, for the first time in the series there were morality chocies, you can kill someone of let them live. Even the ending differs upon the players choices. The reality focus on this one both makes it better and demishes the expernce. The fact that there is no jets, planes, or tanks is a minus but the physics and controls makes it a plus.

My Score: 11/10 (Yes still possible)

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned (2009)

Rockstar Games/Rockstar North

I just recently was able to play this as it came out for 360 first, but when I did I was glad I spent my money buying this. I completed it 100% and it was one of the most fun expansion packs of all time. The story following a biker gang is just what GTA has been missing. Johnny Klebitz is actually pretty funny unlike most other Grand Theft Auto heros. There were alot of times in the game that I found so funny I had to play it 4 more times just to see the cutscence again (and no its not the part where the congressman has his penis out :P ) it also features a wonderful multiplayer component with a bunch of added bonuses like new game modes and connection upgrades.

My Score: 9.5/10

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad Of Gay Tony (2009)

Rockstar Games/Rockstar North

The Ballad Of Gay Tony is the final expansion pack for GTA IV and is the best of the two. It brings back the over-the-top and explosive action over the GTA III era. The story is a so-so trip but the climatic end makes playing it all that much worthwhile. There are plenty of new mini-games to play, ranging from Golf to Drug Wars to danceing Tonys night clubs that should add some more hours of fun. The scoreing on missions makes you want to replay them trough the menu on your phone which is also added in the DLC. The weapons that were added in the the DLC range from AA-12s with explosive rounds to .44 magnum pistols. Some more over-the-top vehicles were added like a helicopter that shoots unlimited missles to NOOSE Tanks with explosive rounds. All of the for a cheap price make it the best DLC ever made.

My Score: 10/10
