Weekly Blog - 17/01/2007

Happy 2008 GS users!. I have had a little break over the christmas holidays with friends and family but last week it was back to college for me. I was pretty much given piles of coursework to get thorugh as soon as I got back and its has really eaten up any time I have had to myself of the last couple of weeks. I study a games design course at college and for the most part of it I am analysing every aspect of the new media industry which can get a little boring after a while. Anyways today I decided to get rid of my PSP, yep after having my second PSP for a couple of months I was not happy with it and traded it in at Gamestation. I took down my PSP lite and 4 games and I got £130 for them which I bought BioShock, Command and Conquer 3, Mass Effect and Rainbow Six: Vegas I still have a credit note so I am going to wait for Burnout Paradise to be released next week.

I will explain the reasons for getting rid of the PSP Lite. Its way too fragile and dosnt have the same, well-built, feel of the original PSP. The disc tray is very fragile and feels like it will break everytime I opened it. The battery life isnt all its cracked up to be, at one point I found myself charging the thing everyday!. It isnt that much faster than the PSP phat, and even in some cases it is alot slower. I have relalised the lack of decent games on the PSP, if you cant already buy the same game on the Xbox 360's marketplace then it isnt worth playing. Only a handfull of games, GTA:VCS, Tekken: Dark Ressurection, Tony Hawks Underground 2 Remix and Fight Night are actually worth playing.

I have got round to completing a couple of games over the holiday. I completed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Veteren, which is the difficulty it should be played on. I completed Guitar Hero 3 on expert which is something I never thought that I would ever do after Hard modes difficulty nearlly broke my fingers. I have just posted my review for Assassin's Creed which is an amazing game. I also completed Halo 3 on normal, I will go through that game agian on Legendary using a guide so I can get the skull achievements.

Before I go, this week I decided to buy a Madden game and I found Madden 07 for £13. I got the really easy 700 points by simulating the seasons for 30 years. The disc was in fairly bad condition so I took it back the next day and got my £13 back :D. 700 gamerpoints for free!

New Review! - Assassin's Creed

Weekly Update - 16/12/07

Christmas has come a little early for myself this year. In the last week I finaly got paid for a website design job that I did and I decided to buy myself an Xbox 360 with it. I have been looking around at different stores over the last couple of weeks for a decent deal and settled on a deal from Curries.digital. The deal included:

  • XBOX 360 Pro (With the HDMI port)
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Halo 3
  • Virtua Fighter 5

I got the deal for £280 which I am very happy with. I got the Xbox home and unpacked it straight away, there are a couple of things I wasnt too happy about. It seems that Microsoft are making the xbox 360 with a little less effort, its the little things put together that makes everything seem cheap. The ethernet cable that came with it was completly ruined from were it had been bended, The little USB door on the faceplate snapped when I first put my MP3 into it. These are little problems which Ill just leave alone and enjoy a console that I have wanted for a long time now. Assassins Creed is amazing and looks incredible on my HDTV, Halo 3 is miles better than Halo 2 and Virtua Fighter isnt a bad game. Ill have reviews for all these games and the other PSP games up during the christmas holidays. My parents are getting me Guitar Hero 3 for the 360 with the new guitar and a year of Xbox live for christmas which I cant wait to get hold of.

Thats it for this week, I have my last week of college before the christmas holidays and alot of work to get handed in. But hopefully I will not have any work of the holidays and I can just enjoy my new xbox and celebrate christmas without the hassle of coursework.

New Review! - Tekken: Dark Resurrection

Finally got round to finishing the review. It's a brilliant game which deserves a brilliant review.

I gave it a 9.8/10

Also whilst im here can I just front my anger about the whole Jeff Gerstmann situation. BRING JEFF BACK, he has given this website so much over the last 10 years and to be fired because he was being truthful about a terrible game is appalling! .

Weekly Update - 26/10/07

Quite alot has happend over the last week, I finaly got Guitar Hero 3 :D Fight Night Round 3 :D and a new HDTV :D.

I have played through Guitar Hero 3 over the weekend and it is, by far, the best GH game to date. The songlist is incredible, a load of some of my favourite song and then the rest are just really fun to play. However, saying that, there are a few let downs... Bloc Party's Helecopter is a really bad song as it is and the GH3 tranlastion dosnt do it much justice. That goes for Kaiser Cheifs - Ruby and When you were young by The Killers. The best songs have to be Metalica - One, QOTSA - 3's and 7's, Muse - Knights of Cydonia and Dragonforce - Through the fire and flames. These are also the hardest song to play on the game as well, especially the Metalica solo. The game looks fantastic, and thats just the PS2 version. My only critism, graphics wise, is that the drummer looks absolutly terrible, this wasnt such a problem in GH2 because the camera did not focus on the drummer everytime there is a drum solo. The drummer sits there, completly still and the only the arms will move as he performs incredible looking drum solo's.

I also bought Fight Night Round 3 for the PSP over the weekend, again I am very impressed with the game. I have played alot of Fight Night games before and enjoyed them alot but this one has got me addicted the most so far. As for first impressions the graphics are excellent considering it is a PSP game, the soundtrack really suits the game (It's moslty hip-hop but it isnt all that bad) and the career mode is very enjoyable.

Somethign that really suprised me over the weekend was that I got my chritmas present very early, a 19" LCD HDTV!. I had asked for a new TV for christmas and over the weekend my grandma decided to get it me before the christmas shopping rush really started to take off. I bought the TV from Currys.digital forjust under £300, It is HD Ready (1080i), has DVB-T Freeview, a DVD player built in aswell as a load of ports for Componant, HDMI, PC-VGA and some AV sockets. I got it home only to find out that the idiots down at Currys forgot to include the power cable for the thing!. I had to trail back into the Town Centre to pick it up aswell as a really expensive freeview ariel (It gets HD Freeview so im happy with it!). The TV is brilliant, much better than the awfull portable TV I had before and I cant wait to see what a PS3 would look like on it! All I need now is to get paid for a website I made and I can go and buy it with Assasians Creed.

I doubt I will be able to get the Tekken review up here soon, I seem to apologise for that everytime I do a blog but I really dont have time at the moment. I will finish it before I start any other reviews. Thats it for this week, I dont think much will be happening over the next week, apart from alot of coursework :/.

Weekly Update: 19/11/07

So I got rid of Rainbow Six after being very disapointed with it, I was very pleased with the trade in price too. I originally bought the game for £16 and I got a £14 trade in price, although saying I dont think there is even £2 worth of game in RS:V. I was looking for Fight Night 3 when I came across Tony Hawks: Underground 2 Remix. I havnt played a Tony Hawks game in quite a long time, actually thinking back the last one I played was in fact Tony Hawks: Underground 2 for the XBOX. I loved the game before and after reading the back to refresh my memory about the game I found out that it had some new gameplay modes and levels, so I went to trade the game. Now after learning from a previous mistake at GameStation involving a copy of Madden 06 in a terrible state I decided to go to Game this time.

Whilst I was there I pre-ordered a copy of Guitar Hero 3 for the PS2 (I will get around to buying a PS3 once I can afford one :/). It took a while but only because some genius had decided to put a hole punch right through the middle of the pre-order code. I was talking to the guy about the PS3 and if it was worth buying before or after christmas. It turns out that most retailers will not sell the 60GB version anymore and instead have released a 40GB version with some really tempting deals. I was contemplating on buying a 40GB version anyway but if I can get one with Assasains Creed and another game then I will most likely buy one over the XBOX 360.

After playing through THUG2:R on Easy (Which believe me dosnt take long) I am very impressed with the game. The graphics show exactly what the PSP is capable of, being PS2 quality. I will review the game once I have played through it on Sick. Whilst I am on the subject of reviews... Tekken. This is taking me a pretty long time for one simple reason... coursework, I have too much on at the moment and I dont have the time to write a review worthy of this game (Can you tell the score I will be giving it yet?). As soon as I have time I will review it and get onto my next mission... Finding a way of buying Manhunt 2 in the UK!.

That's all for this week. Next week I will be giving my first impressions on GH3. Remember please, you US gamers got this game a hell of alot sooner than we have. I will be getting back on track with a game I should have completed as soon as I got my PSP, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Op's. And maybe starting to finish up with THUG2:R, see ya next week!.

GTA:LCS came on Monday, Loving it already!

Yep my copy of GTA:LCS came on Monday. It was there on my desk waiting for my arrival home from college and almost immediatly it was ripped out of the play.com packaging and straight into my PSP. The game is fantastic, I loved Vice City the most out of the console versions and this one is surpassing it already!.

Now for my impressions of Play.com. I am very pleased with the delivery of this game, it came in a very secure bubble wrapped envelope which left everything in perfect condition. I am also very pleased with the price of the game, to say its only £10 (About $20). Overall, very impressed and I will be using them alot more in the future.

I am also gunna get rid of Rainbow Six: Vegas (PSP Version) because it is one of the worst games I have ever played, no joke. No where near as good as its console counter part. In fact im not even gunna write a review for it, I can sum it up pretty easily...

  • Graphics are terrible
  • A.I. is even worse, the "Terrorist's" get stuck in doorway's, cant aim for the life in them and stand there waiting for you to chase them down
  • THE GAME ISNT EVEN SET IN VEGAS!!. You just have to continuosly chase down the terriorist who have kidnapped two Rainbow Six agents.
  • The game is incredibly short. I completed it in about 3-4 hours, im serious.

There is nothing good about this game. I bought it for £16, about £25 retail but I got alot of discounts, hopefully I can get a decent trade in price and get something which is less of a waste of money. I hate to be cruel about games, but when you can just see that no effort has been put into making a game (And trust me, you can SEE it) it's hard to believe that they have the nerve to charge so much for the game. I think ill buy Fight Night and take my anger out on that :P

Weekly Update - 10/11/2007

Its been a pretty good week for me this week, alot is starting to happen at college. We are actually starting to make a game. Even though im stuck with the ActionScript programming job I think we have a really good idea (It involves Post-Apocalyptic zombie bunnies :O).

I have also ordered Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for the PSP on Friday. I got it for £9.99 from play.com which is the cheapest price I have seen for the game so far. Hopefully it will arrive on Monday or Tuesday, I cant wait for that game.

My Tekken review is coming along pretty nicely too, I will finish it off whenever I have some spare time because I have quite a bit of coursework on at the moment.
