I agree. The new widget/module on Gamespot was blinding the first time I saw it. It takes away from everything else that I want to see. It reminded me of a less bad version of the University of Denver's new site that blinded me last year. Their second version that's currently being used is better.
My suggestion would be to have something that looks more like espn.com. It's a good example of a site that does a great job showing both the headlines/videos and top news stories all on the same line at the top of the page.
Lastly, the wasted space on the right side at the bottom of the page seems a little silly. For example, there doesn't seem to be an ad banner or any additional modules next to the article feed at the bottom of the page. It makes the right side look empty. I like scrolling through all the article headlines (don't eliminate the front page scrolling), but it seems like there's a lot of empty space that could be utilized better.
