Unforgiven Blu-ray review

reviewed by f1ipmode

As my tastes movies begin to change I find myself day by day gravitating to movies that have a lot more substance then style. I've seen Unforgiven when I was younger and just thought it was ok so I've decided to give it a try on Blu-ray. Now I can say since my tastes have changed that I now think that this movie is amazing.

The story is about an old gun fighter William Munny(Clint Eastwood) who has long given up his ways because of a woman he loved dearly, she has since passed on and he is now left with two children to take care of. He tries to make due as a pig famer but it is clear that the money is not rolling and a result accepts a Job to kill a couple of cowboys mangle a womans face for what would seem to be a "little" reason. I love that the characters in the movie are presented in way that it's difficult to determine who is really "good" and who is "bad". There is something in all the main characters to really dislike as well as like for example Will Munny is branded as a Killer of women and children yet you can see that he has indeed changed his ways for the good. Without spoiling the story to much for people who haven't seen it I can say that the movie is great, well acted and well directed.

Movie 9/10

Now I've been enjoying Blu-ray movies for a while on my HD tv and have to say that this is one of the best video transfers I've ever seen considering the age of the movie. The video exibits that window effect where you think that you just looking through glass into another world. Sharpness and detail are amazing site to behold, and the color is vivid from the mandarin orange colored sunsets to the light blue clouded skies. There is not a single spec of dirt or problems which I've noticed on other older movies. Warner Bros. must be commened for this transfer.

Video 10/10

For sound we are given a Dolby 5.1 track that plays at 640kbps. I wish that Warner also included a uncompressed 5.1 track but alas that is wishful thinking. That being said the 5.1 track is decent. It's clear and there is good use of the rear speakers. The voice track is well done and I never once had to adjust my center speaker.

Sound 7.5/10

As for the features we are givin the typical set of how the movie was made and a feature of Clint Eastwoods other works. I do wish that Clint did a commentary for this movie though.

Features 6/10

This is a great movie and a great Blu-ray disk if you want to view a movie more on the serious side of film making.
