I dont think it likes the .com.au address because Sony probably blocked email accounts to your region only.

My friend has a US account and we live in the UK so it can be done but i think he registered them to different email accounts. So if you have another account you could try that or sign up on GMail or Hotmail and register as if you lived in the US.
