I'm assuming it'll be the same in DS3, but in the previous games, whenever somebody gave a message you left a good review, it would refill your health. So besides reading them, it can also help to leave some messages every once in a while!

Also, slow and steady. If you run through Dark Souls, you will die.

Lastly, since the game doesn't have much story, if you realize you made some key mistakes by getting rid of a boss soul or missing an item, go ahead and restart. It won't take too long to get back to where you were. I had to do that a bunch my first times through DS2 until I found a build that worked really well.
