There are two genres that I would like everyone to pick from. Please only pick one game for each.
Shooters (modern, sci-fi, 1-st person, 3rd person)
RPG (Turn based, real time, action, etc)
Xbox 360 one please
Mine would have to be Call of Duty 4 and Lost Odyssey
I bought a Halo Edition Xbox 360 with 2 controllers for $250 6 months ago from a college student running low on funds for books.
I only rent games (gamefly). It costs me $23 a month and I so far have played all recent titles. You should switch also and avoid these high gaming costs!
My buddy bought Brothers in Arms: HH and I rented it. We beat it around the same time, (5 days). Multiplayer was terrible, and replaying was not fun. This game went towards my monthly membership and he spend $65!
Everyone listen up. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. I have a gamefly account, and I beat this game in two days. It has 10 missions that are above average in terms of excitement. The graphics look really good on 1080i display. The gameplay is solid. However the game is a repeat in strategy. Take cover, have one squad supress, the other squad flank. Advance and repeat. I bea the game at 20 minutes per each level. The multiplayer is horendous. I will not even talk about it. It is just broken.

It hard to say which one will be better.
Call of Duty World at War is developed by Treyarch, not Infinity Ward (COD4). Treyarch's COD games were worse than Infinities games. Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty: Big Red One were not as great and COD1 and COD2 & COD4. It is said that COD:WAW is borrowing COD4's engine, so it might turn out equally as good. If the gameplay is exactly the same in WAW as it is in COD4, only this time it is a WWII setting, then I am down for WAW more than Far Cry 2.
Far Cry 2 is not made by the original developers that made Far Cry. I do not know for sure how good the game will be, or if (any) bugs are in the game.
WAW is your best bet because the worst the game can turn out is above average. There is no way Acitivision will allow Treyarch to ruin the COD franchise after what COD4 set.
I think that fable on the xbox is overrated. The presentation of the game is solid, as well as the gameplay. But the overall story was totally flat and the dialogue was written by a five year old; it was too simple. I hope Fable II fixes this. I read that the game is going to be fully explorable dynamic unlike the first where you travelled piece by piece.
Far Cry was great. But since Crytek did not develop, nobody knows for sure how good the game is going to be.
I reccomend you open a gamefly account. October is going to be the best month for video games this year. I will get the chance to play all of them "Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Fable II, Midnight Club; LA, Fallout 3, etc, for only 23 bucks a month.
As to your original question, it depends on what genre you like best.
They said fable II will have 100 hours of gameplay if all side quests are completed.
Far Cry 2 will have multiplayer so it might have a lasting appeal.
