All the recomendations are great so far. If you don't care about how recently the games came out you also might want to try Homeworld and Homeworld 2, as well as many other great RTS's. As for FPS, the posts above pretty muhc cover it. Have fun man.
I'd have to say CoD3. I dont play online multiplayer on consoles so i was hoping for a decent single player experience. However, what i got was a seemingly unpolished p.o.s. Keep in mind that i played and loved the first two on the PC.
