Because of the old Japanese tale about the grasshopper who fell in love with a carp despite the carp wanting to eat him. The carp managed to control his urges to eat the grasshopper, however, and they got married. The carp grew more and more frustrated, however, as the grasshopper always left the water to go drinking with his grasshopper buddies, never wanting to spend time with the carp anymore. So, the carp started drinking heavily, and one night, in a drunken rage, threw a dinner plate at the grasshopper. The grasshopper wanted a divorce, and the carp was all too happy to give him one. What the grasshopper didn't know, however, is that the carp was good friends with the best lawyer in the entire world. So, the grasshopper lost almost everything he owned, yet the carp still wanted more. The grasshopper decided that was enough. So, he thought of a way to get away from the carp. By building an island. Since the carp lived in a lake, she could not travel to that island. The grasshopper gathered small bits of dust and pebbles, and a few months later, he had built his island getaway to escape his crazy ex-wife, the carp. And thus, Japan was born.
