Fear 3 (7.5)

  • Gameplay: 8.0
  • Storyline: 8.0
  • Sound: 7.5
  • Graphics: 8.5
  • Music: 7.5

I loved the first Fear title. I found the storyline to be rich and intriguing with some really good gameplay mechanics. The second Fear title I found to be a quick throw together, the kind of title thats likely developed in the east in some non-English speaking country just to turn a quick profit, honestly...it was terrible.

This title however, redeems itself pretty well. I can say with certainty this is the first game I've played in quite a while that had absolutely no glitches in it whatsoever. Not with collision, graphics anomalies, sound, models, nothing. It played quite well. The controls and game mechanics are what you'd expect to find in a Fear title, pretty much the same as the original. You still have control of the time dilation to allow for Max Payne like takedowns.

As you progress through the levels, youll find yourself quickly exploring every single nook and cranny in the hopes you will find more ammo, a psychically charge corpse (which can be used to rank yourself up by absorbing the psychic energy) or an Alma doll (which also adds to your psychic energy rank up). The more psychic energy you absorb from the hidden dolls and specific corpses, the more you will rank (or level) up and gain more time dilation ability.

The run feature has a nice added bonus being that you can run then melee which will cause a sliding kick making it easy to then continually melee your victims to death. A common theme in this game is "Where is the ammo?", so you'll more than likely find yourself taking quick pot shots using your ranged weapons, then running up and meleeing to save ammo. The graphics have been amped up quite a bit the keep up with the modern hardware.

The sound and visuals were all pretty good. The storyline was also surprisingly good. This time around, your psychic brother is with you in spirit. At first glance this type of scenario comes off as a bit much, but in time you learn to really like having your brother appear from time to time, he even lends a hand to save you in some of the cutscenes, well done guys. The gameplay itself although linear in nature is pretty decent.

The game is a bit short in my opinion, I was able to walk through it in just a few hours on normal. However, for those of you out there that like to play multiplayer, you may enjoy some of the varied modes this game offers. I would suggest this game if youre a fan of the franchise but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it. If you have a few extra bucks and some spare time, grab it off a discount site.

Lego Lord of The Rings (8.5)

  • Gameplay: 9.0
  • Storyline: 8.5
  • Sound: 9.0
  • Graphics: 7.5
  • Music: 8.0
  • Overall: 8.5

Admittedly I'm not a fan of lego games however, this game is by far the most fun and exciting game of this genre. The game follows the basic story line for the most part regarding Lord of The Rings, but it embellishes with humorous side stepping and comedic behavior.

672705_20120712_640screen001.jpg

The problem solving is greatly heightened by the ability to swap between party characters at any time. All characters in your party have a specific special ability which can unlock or perform a required action to solve a puzzle. For example, Sam can light fires and cook, Legolas can shoot arrows, Gimli can break heavy stone coverings, etc.

672705_20120712_640screen002.jpg

The entire paradigm lends itself very well to the game's overall fun. The fighting is simple and single button. The multi-player (2-player console) mode makes it very fun to play with another. The cut-scenes are anywhere from humorous to exciting. The graphics are good, as you'd expect from a lego styled game.

672705_20120712_640screen005.jpg

The sound is spot on, with voices and clips that match the original theatrical score. All said and done, this game is an amazing amount of fun, highly recommended even if you're not a fan of lego games like myself.

The Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena (7.0)

  • Gameplay: 7.0
  • Storyline: 7.5
  • Sound: 9.0
  • Graphics: 8.0
  • Music: 7.0
  • Overall: 7.0

Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is the third installment of the Chronicles of Riddick game franchise and by far the worst. Unfortunately this game lends itself to many glitches and otherwise lazy efforts in both level design and gameplay. One of the more annoying aspects of the game is the way you are able to get shot while completely hidden behind or even inside of an otherwise completely obscuredcontainer, very poor shot collision detection.

F41A319E1C42F86363DE0F2AB1BA772ED55490B2

Just behind that is the amazing ability to get shot from enemies that aren't even facing your direction...hmmm. The level design although very well done visually in some areas is very linear and feels almost like that scene from Galaxy Quest where they're trying to make their way through the engine room and there are objects chopping and smashing for absolutely no reason. There are also quite a few sprite, particle and air born weapon errors.

DFED24DBE031D1F188D720FBCC855412122CAF0B

Occasionally when firing a weapon, it would just stop working and there would be a frozen muzzle flash stuck in mid air, or when a rocket was fired sometimes it would just circle around in the air forever and downed enemies would sometimes develop crazy leg syndrome. The game does have some positive points however, the voice acting was very well done and includes Vin Dielsel and Lance Henriksen. The sneak, kill and stealth aspects were all well done.

C416414686BE1F77CC5ACA8178DC219AD04A9D0C

The hand to hand fighting was decent with a decent set of varying moves, blocks and counter attacks. However, overall I would not recommend this game unless you are a huge fan of the Riddick series as a whole. The game just appears rushed and not polished at all.

I loved this game. I found the game mechanics, story line, sound effects and music absolutely fantastic. I'm a big fan of stealth kill games that follow in the footsteps of Hitman and similar. This game definitely follows in those footsteps as well. The hidden flags throughout the game drive map exploration as does the eagle eye views and sub quests.

F8B8FDCABC6EE42442B736F6680C1B7A7EFBB62EThe graphics are beautifully done, well textured and shadowed. The free running aspect of the game really lends itself to quick escapes and adds a bit of a excitement when needing to travel from one end of the city to the other.

792DD98F87A5931FE0381007A4440E1A96848AD2The game battle mechanics are great too, allowing you to unlock new moves and quests are completed. Throwing, counter attacks, blocks, all included. The ability to low profile and high profile kill really let's you explore what is acceptable and what isn't depending on bystanders and onlookers.

AE9B2DBE282BF05D460E6FD59C5FF2F0EB5221A4The music is done very well and adds to the games overall immersement. The story line is very rich and deep. So deep in fact that if you pay close attention, you'll begin to get a sense of a much larger conspiracy theme. Overall this was a great play, a must play for fans of the stealth genre or fans of Prince of Persia type games.

Darksiders (8.0)

Darksiders was pretty decent game all around. I wouldn't say it was spectacular in any one way, it was what you'd expect from a third person styled hack and slash. It combines level up capabilities with exploration and combination or move based combat. The storyline was decent, once again not spectacular but enough to keep the player interested. Hidden chests and the collection of souls to power-up weapons and moves drive level exploration. The fighting style and slow motion end moves or fatalities add a bit of flare to the otherwise constant button mashing. The graphics are decent, and the PC version doesn't really allow you to scale up or down the graphics to match your computer's capabilities leaving the textures and models just decent looking. The music suits the game. All in all, the game is a decent play if you like the third person hack and slash genre. No real ground breaking anything, just another decent game.

Darkness 2 (8.5)

Check out the gameplay montage!

First of all, let me just say that I loved the graphics in this game I wasn't sure I would at first but the comic book styling really lends itself to the fact that the game is actually derived from a top cow comic book. The voice acting in this game is pretty spot on. and of course the voice of the darkness is non other than former Faith No More front man and vocalist Mike Patton which is very awesome.

Other characters in the game also do a great job of adding very believable and extremely colorful dialog. The dialog even goes as far as to allow multiple dialogs on a per character basis as you continually interact with them. The storyline is gripping and very well done and makes for a good transition from the previous title.

4E500845B36E047B93C354E21BB2FE2DE74AE4D3

The loading times are offset by Jackie's solo dialog taking you deeper into his state of mind and feelings as you progress through the game. This game is extremely graphic and violent, just the way I like it. Your little minion lends a helping hand and enhances the entertainment value in both dialog and interaction with fallen foes. Doing anything from comical interaction with the environment to farting or urinating on downed enemies. At certain points in the game you even get to control your little henchman and perform kills and advance your progress.

The destructible environment makes for an interesting array of both weapons and shields. As you progress through the game, you'll earn essence points. These points are earned through executions, kills and by finding relics. There are quite a variety of executions that become available and all are gruesome and satisfying. The essence points you collect can then be used to unlock additional abilities and strengthen the ones you already have. Finding relics will earn you quite a bit of essence and drives map exploration.

Just like in the previous Darkness game, light hurts the darkness so you'll spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out how to shoot the lights out or how to turn them off. The gameplay and controls take a little getting used to, but once you've got them down they can be used to create a wide assortment of take downs, combinations and executions. Dual wielding weapons make reload times pretty painless once you learn how to properly utilize it. The game soundtrack includes some popular tracks from the past including songs from Janes Addiction, Tone Loc and others. My only real complaint with this game is the length of the game in storyline mode. I was able to beat this game rather quickly, in only a few hours in total. On a positive note however, once you've beaten the game, you can go back and play through the vendetta game modes which allow you to experience the game through the side questing eyes of different characters and see how those side quests affected the main storyline filling in a few gaps here and there. Not to mention each vendetta character utilizes the darkness is new and interesting ways. All in all, this is a great game and I highly suggest it to fans of the series.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (9.0)

  • Gameplay: 10
  • Storyline: 8
  • Sound: 9
  • Graphics: 9.5
  • Music: 7
  • Overall: 9.0

First let me premise by saying, I really don't like Batman. I think the whole Batman and DC comics thing is a bit juvenile. That being said however, this game is anything but. The game itself is dark and very adult. Combining elements of stealth and takedown like you'd expect to find in Splinter Cell or Metal Gear.

8061571296_e145750c32_h.jpg

The combat system is fantastic. Utilizing combination attack moves and take-downs with cinematic slow motion finishing moves. Combine that will riddles left behind by Enigma that make you search out areas where clues might be hidden.

8061569239_68c3f7042e_c.jpg

When these riddles are uncovered or solved, you collect points that allow you to upgrade and unlock new moves, gadgets and weapons. That further allow you to get to places you could not previous and unravel more riddles...it's just a vicious cycle of show me more!

8061571336_81d5eea228_c.jpg

The ability to go into dectective mode lends itself to finding alternate routes, detecting enemies around corners and enhances the game quite a bit. The main baddies and dialog of the game help to make this game more along par with a Resident Evil title than anything near what you'd expect to see in a Batman title.

8061571858_881db6b882_c.jpg

This game was developed using the Unreal engine and was published by Square Enix, so the graphics as you would expect are great.

8061568287_6abc95cab8_c.jpg

The voice acting in this game is quite entertaining as is the fan-service provided by the female villains. All in all this is a must play game for anyone who appreciates a good Resident Evil title or a good stealth game. It's just not what you'd expect.

Rage Is Fantastic! 9.5

  • Gameplay: 10
  • Storyline: 9
  • Sound: 7.5
  • Graphics: 10
  • Music: 8
  • Overall: 9.5

Rage has to be one of the most underrated first person shooters I can think of. The game was marketed decently but I had no idea how good it really was. This game combines many of the best elements of the FPS genre to create an absolutely great post apocolyptic adventure.

1024x575.resizedimage

The ability to create weapons and usable items from things found while exploring is awesome. The graphics are insanely good, especially when played on a top notch graphics machine like an Alienware laptop. This game also incorporates elements of games like Fuel and card gaming like Yugi-oh.

1024x575.resizedimage

Car races allow you to unlock new cars and add-ons to your car which make you more powerful. Rare cards are found while exploring and allow you enchance your current card deck and win when playing non playable characters for money. Upgradable weapons and components, manufacturing recipes and vast world make this game really enjoyable.

1024x575.resizedimage

The storyline is also quite good and very immersive. I highly recommend this game. It's available on Steam and Gamefly for pretty cheap as of this writing. If you haven't played it and you're a fan of the FPS genre, you're missing out.
