You do have an edit button. Its on the scroll menu on the bottom right of your posts.

is that still there on game forums? i've never seen it before. needless to say it's a major :) thing

so the general consensus seems to be: screw the old people. logic is on our side.

that's great, as it was pretty much going to be my angle from the start. it's just good to hear that a lot of people agree and share similar views

thanks guys

^ thanks for the input, but i totally agree with taking off earrings with PE and such for safety reasons...

so does anyone have a final answer? there's no wonderful anti sexism law that could help me out here? i've got a LOT of support but nothings guaranteed without the law behind me...

^ actually, only studs are allowed because this is the school policy for girls as well. girls may wear one small discreet stud in each ear, while boys are allowed none.

and it's pretty hard to argue that male ear piercings are socially unacceptable. many of my male teachers have them themselves, and no one thought anything (ANYTHING) of male ear piercings before the rule was introduced. the extent of comment on it was: 'oh mate you got your ear pierced? cool'. even the teacher who's been given the task of ensuring that uniform rules are met wears an earring.

so do you really think that the school frowns on ear piercings? honestly, this decision has been made by a few old peoplewho really have very little interaction with the actual school or the people in it - the governors. the school really can't justify this sudden change of stance...

^ thanks for the support. now let's get you open to the idea of having both ears pierced :P

but yes i could live with just the one ear being allowed, as this is the norm for most men getting ears pierced and many people that i know who don't mind ear pirecings in men are still averse to the idea of both ears being pierced.

^ haha yes it does. so does stopping boys from wearing earrings and going to a lot of effort to get people to take theirs out.

i've thought that my school is far too harsh on uniform for a while now, and have always discussed this reasonably with teachers. their response was always 'take it up with mr johnson (my headteacher)'. now that i've found a truly unreasonable and frankly ridiculous rule i intend to do just that. i don't think that THAT'S very silly...

and yes maybe getting my own ear pierced would be on the drastic side, and i probably won't. the main reason for me considering it is that many people have asked why i actually care when the rule doesn't effect me. the answer is that i see it as an injustice that my friends should get into trouble for wearing earrings, and i am the only person with the willpower to actually start people on the road to questioning that rule... it sounds vain, but it's true :)

to all of the people saying that guys look ridiculous with earrings:

that is your opinion, and i respect it. however, boys wearing earrings is socially acceptable to the huge majority of people, and if you don't like it then don't get your ears pierced.

it's insane to 'govern' a group of people (in this case my schoolfriends) based on one's personal likes and dislikes. due to the lack of explanation from any teacher despite questionning on the issue, i can only assume that there is no real reason for earrings to be banned for boys...

i, for instance, think that guys look like wimps wearing my school's jumper. i wouldn't dream of trying to get jumpers removed from the uniform though, as they are socially acceptable and there is no practical reason for removing them

my school is one of the top performing schools in the country. we outclass many private schools. the last crack down on uniform was an attempt to make girls wear their skirts longer.

i totally understand why upholding smartness and uniform is critical to the success of the school. i've spent hours thinking about it and had discussions about uniform in general with my parents. that doesn't stop me from hating it, but i understand it and i can see how it is linked to my school's success.

stud earrings, however, are SO discreet and SO small i cannot see the harm in letting boys wear them. the major argument against me so far has been 'well boys don't want to wear skirts...' no of course we don't. a boy wearing a skirt is not SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE. this is the key factor here. it is not socially acceptable for a boy to wander down the street wearing a skirt, but it doesn't occur to anyone that wearing an earring is strange.

it's difficult for me to convey my point when not in person, but i think i have summed it up here: if you're going to let girls wear earrings, then you should let boys do so as well, as far as it is socially acceptable. if you have one rule, then you have to stick to it. you can't change it sexistly on a whim...
