Information on SD & HD tv's for the next-gen consoles

Right, after seeing another post about someone asking if the XXX console will support SDTV's (Standard Deffinition TV's) i am going to write this blog entry & then post it in the forums & hopefully get it stickied !!! All of the next generation consoles will support SDTV's but you will be limited to how good the games look, they will look better than current generation titles but if you want to experience the best images possible then your going to have to use a Panel that supports High Deffinition Images. For everyone out there, here is a list of the HD standards & the resolutions required to achive those standards. 480i - 704 x 480 - 16:9 aspect ratio - (60/2 Interlaced image = 30fps) 480p - 704 x 480 - 16:9 aspect ratio - (60 Prograssive image = 60fps) 720i - 1280 x 720 - 16:9 aspect ratio - (60/2 Interlaced image = 30fps) 720p - 1280 x 720 - 16:9 aspect ratio - (60 Prograssive image = 60fps) 1080i - 1920 x 1080 - 16:9 aspect ratio - (60/2 Interlaced image = 30fps) 1080p - 1920 x 1080 - 16:9 aspect ratio - (60 Prograssive image = 60fps) Now for you to get a true HD image your TV screen needs to support the above resolutions, but what confuses quite alot of people is their TV says it supports 1080i but their screen resolution is 1280 x 720, so it can never actually display a true 1080i image, if you send an image of 1080i to the tv panel it will scale the image to fit, so your best bet is to send a HD signal that has not got to be scaled, in this example case a 720p signal would be best. Also, a 1080i image on a 60" screen will have the same quality as a 720i image on a 42" screen, the resolution increase compensated for any image quality loss as the screen size increases, so the qquality of both images will e the same, but obviously the 60" screen will have a much bigger image. Put simply, a SDTV will play your next gen games & consoles, but if you want the best from them then a HDTV is the way to go
