I have just finished Resident evil 4 on PC and there are some points that I should mention about the game. I gave it 8.5 which is a relatively high score. That is despite the titles shortcomings as a PC game specifically and as a game generally. You have probably have heard about the lack of mouse support and the need for a joypad which I was kind of cool with that. Another issue was the FPS(frame per second) cap of 30 which while is usual on console games but it is low for a PC one. But all of these aside there are [IMO] some extremely bad design choices in the game and CAPCOM failed to appropriately capitalize on this title. I will provide some simple examples.
The weirdest thing which I guess is the same on the console version was the map. from the beginning you could see the whole map, all the rooms, the location of saves and the merchant. This is supposed to be a scary game and part of that sense should be provided through not knowing what is next. Think of when you have passed some tough situations, maybe low on health and ammo and you wish you could save the game but you are not sure what will be behind a door. Is it another challenge? Or A place to get some herbs or safe room for saving?
[spoiler] The early levels of the game are phenomenon because you are face with a living breathing society. People are going and doing their jobs and not just mindlessly waiting for you to kill them. I was amazed by the early areas and was thinking this will continue which unfortunately did not. The later areas were again about creatures waiting to be killed and presented only obstacles that should be overcome like a puzzle game. The real, immersive early levels were a blast in concept but unfortunately did not continue.
[spoiler] Another thing was the merchant. He came out of nowhere with no introduction and no explanation as why he is there. He didn't said what he was doing in that area, is he a native, does he want to avenge something by helping us or he is only looking for the profit. How come no one attacks or harm him?
The story and the cut scenes were not great in my opinion but I gave it a 8.5 because of the atmosphere that it provides and because of its new take on survival horror. It has some additional content apart from the main game which provides some more variety and challenge. Note that I mostly tried to go over the weak spots of the game and not its strong points.
