The True Olympians

For many, the Olympics are about winning the most medals, and why not when the United States has 104?

Audiences everywhere watched in awe as Usain Bolt won gold in 4 x 4 100 m relay, 200 m, and 100 m, and excitement filled living rooms everywhere when Michael Phelps became the most decorated olympic athlete in history.

But two other athletes stuck out for me in a way I could never have imagined, and neither of them won medals:

Lopez Lomong

Lopez Lomong was born in South Sudan and was captured at age six in the Sudanese Civil War. He ran for three days until he reached Kenya. In 2012, he ran 5000 metres in the London Olympics.

Sarah Attar

Sarah was not the fastest woman in the 800 metre race; in fact, she was by far the slowest. That did not stop the hundreds of spectators from applauding in a standing ovation for one of the first Saudi Arabian women ever to compete in the Olympics.

These two athletes represent the Olympic spirit in ways greater than any gold medalist this year. They are a survivor and a pioneer, reminding the world of what it means to be able to take part in such a spectacular event as this. So, while youre counting your nations medals, remember that gold can break, silver fades, and bronze corrodes; but hope can never be destroyed.

I Don't Like the New OT

At all. Who came up with the "great idea" to allow trolling? Seriously?

On a lighter note, I watched The Secret of NIMH recently for the first time since I was a kid and thoroughly enjoyed it. 80's animated films seem to be pretty great even at my age.

Take a step back

Look at yourself completely objectively. You'll be amazed (And frightened) to find that you will not see who you thought you were.

The Club

So one of my friends invited me to go to a club tonight, which was my second time ever going to one. I decided to go mainly because the girl I was interested in was going as well. Now, I know I'm a bad dancer, but I still try to have fun nevertheless. This girl was just rude to me the entire evening, told me a few times to go away (I wasn't sure if she was joking or not), and when I was going to get a drink with my best female friend and her, she decided she had to go to the bathroom; however, my friend assured me they would come right back. About 20 minutes later, I found them on the dance floor and they just smiled like nothing happened. And now I'm wide awake because I can never sleep well when I stay up too late.**** clubs.

I Love This Name

I was at a family reunion recently and someone made a short family history book; one of my ancestor's names was Anastasia. When/if I have a a daughter, I want this to be her name (In spite of the animatedmovie). It is absolutely beautiful.
