Lately I have been thinking about game reviews and how confusing it has become. And after sometime of meditating I came up with this kind of review setting.You see most gaming sites review games by dividing it into categories such as graphics, sounds, gameplay, etc. I have no problem with that kind of setttin as a matter of fact I prefer that kind of review what I don't like about it is that I think most gaming sites give those categories equal weight which I think is wrong. Gameplay is not equal to graphics nor graphics is not equal to sounds. So I develop this kind of review system, each category should be given a specific percentage in the overall score of the game. And this is how it goes:
1. Gameplay = 35% - gameplay is probably the most important aspect of a game on second thought IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! so i believe it is just right to give this category a very high percentage.
2. Visuals = 25% - better visuals makes a game more fun and more immersive but we must always remember graphics is not everything.
3. Sounds = 10% - the same with visuals, the sound of the game contribute to its sense of realism and fun factor but most of the time when I start playing games I barely notice the music and sounds of the game. (at least consciously)
4. Lifespan = 20% - i really like a good game to last a long time so replay value is somewhat important to a game, though really long games that tends to be boring and repetitive is a no no for me. But nevertheless a game that plays great is still a game that plays great even if it is 5hrs long.
5. Story = 10% - who cares if it has a crappy story as long as it plays great and you are having fun with it.
35% + 25% + 10% + 20% + 10% = 100%!!!
so for example i will review MEtal Gear 3 : Snake Eater this is how I am gonna review it:
Gameplay = 97 * 35% = 33.95
Visuals = 95 * 25% = 23.75
Sounds = 90 * 10% = 9
Lifespan = 90 * 20% = 18
Story = 100 * 10% = 10
TOTAL SCORE = 94.7 (just round it off) 95
so there you have it.
(This is just an opinion of mine)
