Society without God

I finished the book Society without God by Phil Zuckerman yesterday. I found it very interesting. The book doesn't try to prove atheism or insult religion in any way; it talks about the few societies in the world where atheism is dominant (primarily Sweden and Denmark), and attempts to explain why atheism is so prominent. It also attempts to prove that atheistic societies are very stable, well-off places to live, disproving the myths that without religion, society would spin out into a dystopia.

The author of the book is a professor who lived in Denmark for over a year. There, he interviewed around 150 Danes and Swedes about their religious beliefs and their opinions on it. There were many things I found surprising. An example is how people who are Christian are treated in elementary school. One boy said that the Christians would actually be made fun of by the non-believers, just like how atheists or gays in the US would be made fun of if they revealed their feelings. Another example is how unimportant their religious beliefs are to them. There were some people who had actually never even contemplated the belief in God or a higher power, which would seem crazy to us Americans.

It pretty much said that Christianity never was ingrained into the minds of the Swedes and Danes like how it always was in the USA and other European countries. It was forced upon them, not accepted. The USA was born as a Christian nation (despite seperation of church and state). And once Christianity is firmly ingrained in one's society, it is hard to remove it. Due to the nature of religion, it is very hard for one to drop it once one's accepted it, as even doubting religion is considered sinful (or as some Christians say, "God is testing their will").

If you want to know what else it has to say, you should check it out. It was only 170 pages long, and well worth the read.

I'm out.

Two-year anniversary!

Hello everyone.

Today is my two year anniversay (and coincidentally my 50th blog) from joining GameSpot! When I joined, I was a Junior in High School and had just started my job as a cashier (which I would keep for a year). Since then:

  • I have had 2701 profile views
  • 83 friends
  • 85 people tracking me
  • 9090 forum posts
  • 50 blog posts (counting this one :D)
  • 18 written reviews
  • 24 games rated
  • 52 moderations
  • Been suspended for over around 34 days
So hopefully I'll be here for a while longer before the ban-hammer falls on me. Make sure one of you makes a thread for me when I get banned!!!!! :x (but let's hope it never comes to that).

This is my blog...

I really wanted to post something nice and meaningful... but I just never have the motivation or inspiration. I'm just distracted by too many other things to write down what I feel.

So I'll talk about what is annoying me. On Monday, it is MLKJ Day, and on Tuesday it is Inauguration. Most everyone gets Tuesday off, and everyone gets Monday off.

Well, except for me. My school is saying we have to go to school on both days. What the ****? :x

Also, my license got suspended from when I sped 77mpg in a 65. I am really really pissed off. I think I might have exceeded the amount of points that can be taken off my license. I also had to pay $200ish and will have to attend an 8 hour driver's ed class (again).

Yet if I had been 20, I would have only had a small fine and been done with it. But because I'm 18, they deem that I must be punished far beyond a regular adult. I hate this state.. SO... ****ING... MUCH.

How have you all been?

Post-Christmas obligatory blog

Another year, another Christmas. This year's has come and gone quickly. It was uneventful. Here is what I got:

2000 Wii Points (which I used to buy World of Goo)

Socks

Shirts

Pajama pants/shirt

Flossers

Bandaids

Afghan prayer rug (from my dad)

$15 gift card to Barnes and Nobles

Package opener

$100

.. and I can't remember the rest.

I spent the afternoon on Christmas at my gf's house. Had fun. She opened the present I gave her a few days earlier.

I hope you all had a good Christmas. The year is almost here.

Christmas wishes...

Just a quick blog. I figured I had to get this done before the "big day." This is list of what I want for Christmas... I probably won't get it though:

GAMES
-Wii Fit
-Wii Points (a lot)
-Godfather: Blackhand Edition

-de Blob
-Bully: Scholarship Edition
-Chrono Trigger

Miscellaneous
-Pants (freshman 15 T_T)
-Shorts
-Time (I need to beat my games >_>)
-A new car

The ones in red are realistic. Blue is a long shot. Orange is never. My mom said I wouldn't be getting Wii Fit. Car costs too much. I haven't expressed that I want the other games.

Hopefully Santa will help though ;)

Adios.

You think I'm an ignorant savage...

No I'm not talking about how British people view Americans, I'm talking about the song Colors of the Wind from the popular disney movie Potahontas.

So I was watching/listening to the song, and I found the song in other languages.

Japanese
Polish
Norwegian
German
Spanish
French
Portuguese
Turkish
Arabic

My favorites (besides the English one) would have to be the Japanese and Polish ones. My least favorite is probably the Arabic. Just doesn't seem to work out for me. There are other languages too, such as Italian, Thai, Finnish, Swedish, Russian, and Greek. I'm surprised it was translated into so many languages.

Probably my favorite Disney song. Which was your favorite?

New element discovered!!!

A new element was discovered:

Lawrence Livermore Laboratories has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science.

The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from four days to four years to complete.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2- 6 years; It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.

When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

SO I got finals next week!

Althought tomorrow I have a final in my math class (PreCalc II). It shouldn't be too hard. I've gotten high Bs the entire semester.

Next week will be tougher. On Monday I have my Spanish final at 11. Wednesday I have my Composition final at 11 as well. And on Friday I have two finals: history 101 at 11 and Sociology at 3.

Hopefully I'll do well. It sucks because there will be no one left on campus by the time Friday rolls around. I could probably run around my hall naked.

Ah well.

I got a paper due tomorrow and I don't know what the HELL I'm going to write on

This past week has been pretty busy for me.  I wrote a 1.5 page paper, and 5 page paper, and nearly a 6 page paper, for three different classes.  And I still have to go over two of them.

Unfortunately, tomorrow (since as I'm writing this it is technically Monday) I have a 3 to 4 page paper due in my History of Western Civilization class.  It is on this book called Aristotle's Children.  In the paper we have to summarize the book and then write how Aristotle influenced Western thought or something like that.

I don't know what I'm going to do since I am only like a fourth in the book and it is like 300 pages long.  And it isn't very interesting.  DAMN!

I guess I'll go read.  I hope you guys had a good Thanksgiving (if you celebrate it).  I ate so much.

Adios. -Tyler
