Which is better? Rock Band or Guitar Hero? Let's find out. We all know that Guitar Hero came out first, but Guitar Hero was first developed by Harmonix, the current developer of Rock Band. Harmonix developed Guitar Hero, and Guitar Hero II. At Guitar Hero III, Neversoft took over. After leaving the Guitar Hero series, Harmonix started working on Rock Band. They wanted to expand the horizon of music games, and they did this by adding full band support. In Rock Band, you could have 4 players playing on drums, vocals, guitar, and bass. After it's initial release, Harmonix began adding DLC (downloadable content) every week, expanding Rock Band's music library. Rock Band was praised by critics, earning a 9.0 on GameSpot. Guitar Hero III, on the other hand, stuck with the guitar and bass. Although, the best version of Guitar Hero III got an 8.0. After establishing itself in the world of music games, Rock Band began aiming higher, with the release of Rock Band 2. In Rock Band 2, Harmonix added some small changes. Those small changes didn't affect the overall image of Rock Band 2, and it received an 8.5 on GameSpot. Neversoft then countered Rock Band 2 with the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour. Guitar Hero: World Tour added full band support, with drums and vocals. It received an 8.0, though. In 2009, Activision, the publisher of Guitar Hero, Neversoft, and Beenox milked the Guitar Hero series like no other. 2009 alone saw the release of 7 mediocre Guitar Hero (and games that ended with "Hero") games. Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Guitar Hero 5, DJ Hero, Band Hero, and Guitar Hero: Van Halen were all released in 2009. In 2009, Harmonix released Lego Rock Band, and The Beatles: Rock Band. I admit, Harmonix may have milked it a little, but not as much as Guitar Hero. Lego Rock Band got a 7.5, and The Beatles: Rock Band got a 9.0. Lego Rock Band may have fallen a little short, but The Beatles: Rock Band is one of Harmonix's best Rock Band games. In 2010, Harmonix released Green Day: Rock Band, which got a 7.5. Rock Band 3 will be released in October, and it will raise the level for music games by adding keyboard support and three-part vocal harmonies, which were already introduced in Beatles: Rock Band. Neversoft will release Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, but it doesn't seem to try to raise the level at all, with a metal soundtrack, and the same four player band. Now, let's talk about instruments for each game. We will start with the guitar/bass. Rock Band has a spectacular guitar, with responsive buttons, and a well-working strum bar. Guitar Hero's guitar is okay, but it has a useless touch pad below the buttons, which fails to respond to anything. In terms of microphones, they're both the exact same in terms of performance. Now, let's talk about drum sets. The latest Rock Band drum set has a four pad drum set with a pedal. Everything works well. The pads are made right, so they're not so bouncy, and not too stiff. The pedal works great, and it will take a TON of effort to break it. The drum set comes with ports for cymbal attachments, for the people who are looking for a more realistic experience. The Rock Band drum set is an excellent peripheral. The Guitar Hero drum set, on the other hand, is the worst thing a designer can come up with. It has three pads, and two "cymbals", and a pedal. The pads are way too rubbery, so a single hit will send your drum stick flying in the air. The cymbals overlap the pads, so when you want to hit the pads, you may just hit the cymbal. The pedal was a horrible design to begin with. Everytime you use it, it will most likely break. So, I'm sure that Rock Band peripherals are better. So, which is better? Rock Band or Guitar Hero? I'm going to say that Rock Band is a trillion times better than Guitar Hero. I've played both games, I've used both instruments, and I know from experience that Rock Band is better. I'm pumped for Rock Band 3's release. It will not disappoint me. If you're a Guitar Hero player, switch to Rock Band ASAP. You won't regret it.
