Dawn of war is brilliant once you get into it. I don't know if civilisation counts as an RTS (well it gets the S anyway) but it's definitely another recommendation, age of the empires is good too. I'm just playing supreme commander now and wow is it epic, I don't think i've ever picked up a game before and thought s@@@ this is going to take some time to get used to. After only half an hour of play I know this game is going to be brilliant. Course it depends if you're after one player or 2 player, I wouldn't recommend dawn of war or age of the empires as single players, but with a few people/online they're great. Also I hear DOW and COHs were made using the same engine? i.e. they might have a similar feel, i've not played COH personally. As a graphical throwback Medieval 1 is just as good as 2, they play completely different in the campaign mode.
I know I'm necromancing but I thought I'd respond just in case anyone else googles this page. I had the exact same problem as the guy above me and solved it by getting the latest directx, which i had to physically download as microsoft seemed to think my direct x was up to date (to 9.0c in my instance as I think 10 is for vista?). Lots of people have been rolling back there sound drivers(?) from 5.1 to 2.1 but I think the latest direct x will solve a lot of peoples problems.
