I remember getting on an argument with someone about the PC version of Halo. It was about them forcing me not to be underwhelmed by PC release of Halo because of supposedly the mods that will come out. Bah. No coop, not enough fun. I'm still underwhelmed. As I am underwhelmed about Halo 2 for Vista. From a programmer's perspective, I'd love to mod it, but as a gamer who has finished Halo 2 on Xbox on Legendary, the game is pretty much an open book.
Just because the engine is already finished it doesn't mean that the programmers can't improve on it. They can refactor the code and make things more efficient.
WOW? No thanks. I'd rather spend my money on fancy cheeses. If you really want a great game at a cheap price (free), look for Marathon. It originally did not have a PC version, but now Bungie released the source code, so there is a PC version.
