I've played FFs VI through XII and I feel that VI and X were the best. For me FFXII strayed too far from the games roots, it ended up feeling like a game with no real storyline or compelling reason to play on. I feel that what I want from XIII is for the series to progress from a similar base as X, with a really deep stroryline and some interesting characters, as well as a more modern combat system. At its best final fantasy is a really immersive series that makes for some good escapist fun and that's what XIII needs to offer for me, perhaps learning from games such as Fable 2 and persona 3 that offer new twists to the genre.
I too am really looking forward to this game, it sounds like it could be a really innovative and interesting game to play, with great potential for xbox live play as well. I just hope that the creators aren't overpitching their product here.
I've only just started playing Oblivion, and after the first fifteen hours or so I haven't actually done anything towards the main story. I have to say that I didn't really notice those flaws in oblivion that people are discussing, though I admit they do exist. I suppose they become more niggling after a while but they certainly aren't ruining what is for me a rather unique game (I've only really played traditional jrpgs).
